Casey with his Eastern Cape Kudu

Editor's note: Casey has been a big part of the CouesWhitetail.com forum for years.  Check out the CouesWhitetail.com hat he was wearing in his recent trip to Africa!  Casey is one of our younger members and it's been fun watching him grow up for last many years.  Now Casey spends his time defending us as a Law Enforcement officer, thank you Casey!

CouesWhitetail.com Member Spotlight - Casey Charter

  1. What is your name?  How about your user name in the forum and how did you choose it?

My full name is Casey Charter and I go by Firstcoueswas80inches which is pretty self-explanatory. When I was 17, I shot my first deer, which scored 84 gross and 82 net, I believe.

  1. What is your favorite part of CouesWhitetail.com (the forum, photogallery, recipes, hunt strategies section, biology section, etc.)?

I think most will agree with me that the forum is the main attraction to the site, but I also like the photo gallery. The photo gallery is very helpful when trying to research a new unit and seeing the types of bucks that can and do come from that unit.

  1. How did you first hear about CouesWhitetail.com?  How long have you been a member?

I believe I heard about CWT.com from MontserMuleys, where there was a forum for Coues deer. It was either “MM” or RedRabbit told me about the sited, and I joined. I joined in December 2003 and have been a steady member since.

  1. How often do you visit the site?  How much time do you spend each visit and what do you do on the site?

Truth be told, I visit the site several times a day, the computers are work recently “blocked” the site, so I have to wait until I get home after work where I log in and check the view new posts. I try my best to help answer question, give compliments, tips I have learned etc with out too much stirring the bucket (which, depending on the topic, sometimes I don’t do to well on that part).

  1. Have you met any other members of the site?  Who are they and have you become friends with them and perhaps gone hunting with them?   Have you introduced some of your friends to CouesWhitetail.com?  Have you attended any of the CouesWhitetail.com Get-togethers?

I have met quite a few members, some have became very close friends and have influenced me to travel to Africa to hunt (and spend money). I have met RedRabbit, Ajohunter, Azcouesandelk, Pops, COOSEFAN, Scottyboy, Azpackhorse, Azpacknhorns, Scoutm, Sundevil, Gr8whthunter, Girlygirlhunter, Coueswhitetail, Aztrapper, Strayhorse, Dodger2, RAM, Huntingfool, Ihunt2live, MattObertin, Ultramag, Snapshot and others. Scottyboy and I traveled to Africa, quail hunt, and deer hunt together often. Azpacknhorns, Huntingfool, Ihunt2live, Scoutm, Mattobertin, Aztrapper are all members whom I have predator called with. I have also deer hunted with Ajohunter, Azpackhorse, Mattobetin, Scottyboyt and Azpacknhorns. I went to Mexico with COOSEFAN and Pops. I believe I was the driving force behind Azpacknhorns, and Huntingfool to both join the site, as well as a few others. I attended the get together in Tucson a couple of years back held at Snapshot’s home…. Everyone who was on the quad ride will remember that…

  1. How long have you been hunting Coues deer?  Describe your favorite Coues Deer hunting memory.

I have been hunting Coues deer as long as I can remember. I remember my dad and I just walking and walking and walking. Stopping every so often to “glass” with our $50 Bushnells on our walking sticks. For about 3 or 4 years, I NEVER saw a buck (I am sure we “saw” bucks, just couldn’t see the antlers.) I remember the first Coues buck I ever saw on a hunt. My dad and I were sitting on a ridge, and two little 3x3’s walked over the top and were headed right for us. They were at about 250 yards, which, for me was a long shot at the time. I opted to let them get as close as possible since they were coming right for us. Well, as our deer do, they disappeared into thin air, going into a finger and never coming out. I was crushed. I thought my one chance at killing a Coues deer was gone!  One of my other memories was the one time my dad and I did not put in together. I wanted to try and draw a juniors only mule deer tag that had a juniors only cow elk tag at the same time. Well, wouldn’t you know it I didn’t draw either of the tags, and my dad drew a 6a rifle bull tag, and a 36b December Coues tag! It worked out all right though, because that is the year I killed my first Coues buck and we ate all the meat on my dads December hunt.

  1. Do you archery hunt Coues or rifle hunt or both?  Tell us about the equipment you use.

I wouldn’t say that I archery hunt for Coues, although I do take my bow out a few days every August and January just to see what happens. Most of my time is spent rifle hunting them.

My bow is an older Mathews Q2, it isn’t a speed demon, but it shoots well and I am comfortable with it.

My main Coues medicine is a .257 Weatherby built by “Willie” on the site. It is a Remington 700 trued, blue printed etc with a 25 ¼” #2 Shilen barrel, with a 4.5-14x44 Zeiss with turrets. Deadly gun shooting either 115gr. VLD bullets, or 100 TTSX bullets. Scottyboy boy and I used the later combination in Africa, and it worked like a charm!

My “backup” gun is a .270 WSM custom built on a Mauser 98 action, McMillian stock, and a 4.5-14x50 Zeiss with target turrets.

I use Leica Duovids, 10-15x50, which I love, and a Velbon Tripod I bought from the site about 5+ years ago and still going strong!

8.  What other species do you enjoy hunting and where do you hunt them?

Besides hunting Coues deer (my number 1 species), I also greatly enjoy hunting predators, and watching Scottyboy’s pair of dogs work a covey of Mearns quail. If I could draw another elk tag, that would be a blast and of course a antelope and sheep tag! I love hunting down south, where a lot of folks won’t go.

  1. Now tell us some more about yourself.   Where do you live?  What type of work do you do (feel free to mention your business so other members can help support it)?   Tell us about your family.

I currently live in Casa Grande, where I bought my home back in September. I work for U.S. Government, in the law enforcement side, not the political side! I have a 14-year-old brother, Cory whom I bought a .243 for a few years ago. We are hoping to get him a buck this year. My dad, Mick hunts with me, but most of his time is spent around the camp making dinner etc which he does an AMAZING job at. My mom, Jody has only been on one hunt. I shot my cow elk the night my mom was with us. Before we left the house, I saw her putting on smelly lotion and told her to take that stuff off! Well, I shot my elk that night and told her it was because she thought the local Avon lady was around!

  1.  Is there something we forgot to ask?  What’s your favorite hunting quote?  Favorite hunting book?  Other outdoor activities you enjoy?

There are several quotes that I like, none of them are too serious but they go something like “You can’t kill anything laying in bed.” (If you say that to Aztrapper, he will tell you you are wrong and will talk about his unit 1 bull he shot in his sleeping bag). Then there is the good ol’ “Nothings dyin’ if led ain’t flyin’.” But, probably the best is Jackie Bushman “Hunt safe, hunt ethically, and always remember to take a child hunting or fishing.”
