CouesWhitetail.com Member Spotlight - Gino Wullkotte

  1. What is your name?  How about your user name in the forum and how did you choose it?

My name is Gino Wullkotte, aka Coues ‘n’ Sheep

I am very fanatical about hunting “coues and sheep”…..as well as elk….with a gun or a bow.

  1. What is your favorite part of CouesWhitetail.com (the forum, photogallery, recipes, hunt strategies section, biology section, etc.)?

My favorite part of CW.com is the people here and the family atmosphere…. Everything from little quibbles, to all out pillow fights, good info and good folks sharing the one thing we all have in common Hunting and Coues Deer!  Regardless where we come from or what we do this little critter brings us all together here as junkies!  That is what I like most about this site!

  1. How did you first hear about CouesWhitetail.com?  How long have you been a member?

I became a member back in January of 2006, just after I shot the largest Coues of my life with a bow (108 1/8 P&Y gross).  I think some had mentioned I should post some pics of that buck on “that coues deer site” on the internet…. Well the rest is history…..HaHa….

  1. How often do you visit the site?  How much time do you spent each visit and what do you do on the site?

Sometimes several times a day…. But there are times when it is days or weeks that I am not on the site, usually due to hunting.

5.                  Have you met any other members of the site?  Who are they and have you become friends with them and perhaps gone hunting with them?   Have you introduced some of your friends to CouesWhitetail.com?  Have you attended any of the CouesWhitetail.com Get-togethers?

I have had the pleasure of meeting many members of the site and making many new friends.  I also have many friends who were here before me on the site, as well as several friends that joined after I did….  Some of the guys that I have become friends with because of the site include Buckhorn, TAM, Grong, Coosefan, CouesWhitetail, WHT_MTNMAN, Bowhunter4life, jeremyb, and at least a half dozen others.  Almost all my good hunting buddies have finally joined the site including Jasonclay, Huntn coues, GameHauler, mjmhunter, SIDERACK, Extreme Coues, ehunt, bustinbucks, Erin Bittner, and RidinOnFaith.  I am still trying to get my Son & my Wife on here, but that likely will not happen….

We have attended the Marshall Lake gathering last year and made a quick stop at the Marshall Lake camp this year as well.

  1. How long have you been hunting Coues deer?  Describe your favorite Coues Deer hunting memory.

I started hunting Coues deer with my dad as a kid…. Dad use to be able to draw a 5th or 6th choice late Whitetail tag every year…. But he was a meat hunter and preferred to hunt mulies because of their bigger body size…HaHaHa…. With that being said, my first Coues memory is of Dad and I sitting on a rock (I was about 6 yrs old) and him spotting a nice coues buck about 500 yds away one calm evening…. He was a brush hunter and he was hunting with a Winchester Model 94 Big Bore, 375 mag. with a scope. HaHa…  He threw that ol’ gun up took steady aim and put a bullet in the ground at the bucks feet! Away the buck ran…  I remember he and I talking about how hard these damn lil’ deer were to find and how small they were for eating…. So he started hunting Carp after that… HaHa… it was years later that I had started hunting and had couple of bouts with buck fever, and never drawing tags, either.  So, I got to thinking…. I never saw good Mulie bucks anyhow… and that I seemed to be developing a knack for “stumbling” into Coues deer and good coues deer spots, so I bought a bow an began to practice… I met my buddy Erin Bittner who had a lot more archery experience than I did and he taught me about broad head plaining and some little tricks I’d have never thought of…. I gave up on carp all together and began to archery hunt coues… I learned a hard lesson about always re-sighting in your bow after tuning… when I shot and lost a velvet buck because of my ignorance…. I put my bow down for a year out of disgust for my stupidity… but after that was when it all changed for me…I shot my first Archery coues, a forky!   All the while, my Bro-in-Law (Larry) and my Wife (Tina) had been working on turning me from a meat hunter into the trophy hunter (that eats what he shoots) that I am today…. Soon after came my first rifle coues tag of my own… and a 90”er hit the dirt!  A finatic was born…. I have been a Coues Nut ever since… I have killed seven Coues with a bow… and although I have found and helped many 110”+ bucks be harvested, I have yet to break that mark with one of my own tags…  My turn is coming.

  1. Do you archery hunt Coues or rifle hunt or both?  Tell us about the equipment you use.

I love hunting coues with a bow and a rifle!  They are two very different things….  However they both require all my patients… bow hunting for me is a sit and wait thing… I am not the quietest guy in the woods so if I am to get one I will wait for him where he lives.  With a rifle I will find them using the best optics I can (or can’t) afford… I still wait… watching for them to make a mistake so I can see them…  My Current equipment isSwaro 15x56’s, an HD STS65 spotting scope, and a 300 Wby Mag that I have dumped a bit of money into, topped with a Huskemaw scope.   I am interested in being proficient out to about 650 yds for some of the wicked country we rifle hunt…. Hoping for a 200 yd shot but being prepared for something longer just in case. When bow hunting coues I now shoot a Hoyt Maxxis 35 and Easton ACC arrows (but I have harvested coues with Proline and Mathews bows, shooting everything from XX75’s to Carbon Express arrows).  Although I have pins out to 90 yards on every bow I shoot they are not for coues… I have never shot at coues at further than 35 yards… the closest was 12 yards.  I have also never missed a deer I shot at… but did humbly suffer one lost buck.

  1. What other species do you enjoy hunting and where do you hunt them?

I really enjoy hunting elk in central Arizona…I am a fanatical late rifle elk hunter, who loves to hunt them in any season, but feels like late huts are as close to coues hunting as it gets if you are looking for “The One”.  I also love hunting Sheep where every they may roam.  I have hunted Dall sheep in NWT Canada, Deserts in Arizona and Utah… and hope to complete my slam one day, as well as continue helping folks toward their slams as well. These are my Passions!

  1. Now tell us some more about yourself.   Where do you live?  What type of work do you do (feel free to mention your business so other members can help support it)?   Tell us about your family.

The Greatest joy in life, for me, has come in hunting with family and friends… having the opportunity to share lifetime memories together.  To have raised a son, Colton, who I think is now a better hunter than I myself am, he is my Best Hunting Buddy and my most trusted friend, and He is my greatest hunting accomplishment.

My Wife and my Son and I hunt together each year and it is the highlight of our lives… My wife finally has taken up the bow hunting after all these years as a rifle hunter, and is now one of the most passionate women bow hunters I know… I truly love watching her success in this new adventure, Colton and I are so proud to have created another “Junkie”… Haha!

I live in Central Arizona and have lived within one mile of where I do today for the last 30 years… I am very passionate about “My Mountain”, some would say…. But I am just attached to the old days… when I roamed these hills alone.

I own a construction company called And Son Construction (www.andson-construction.com) and co-own an asphalt maintenance company called Arizona Surface Systems.  We operate statewide and provide many services, from maintenance of homes, driveways, and parking lots…. To new custom homes, additions, and remodels.

  1.  Is there something we forgot to ask?  What’s your favorite hunting quote?  Favorite hunting book?  Other outdoor activities you enjoy?

Don’t really have anything for here… but one thing I can say is:  “Live each day as if it is your last… Love like there is no tomorrow… Learn from your past, but never regret it… and Rock On!!!” It is not a quote… just something I live by….
