CouesWhitetail.com Member Spotlight :  Jim Mullins

Editor's note:  Jim Mullins has been an outstanding contributor/supporter of CouesWhitetail.com.  He has served as a moderator in the forum for years and always generously shares his knowledge with forum members.  Every year he donates to our Coues Buck Contest too.  He also has a great eye for photography and video editing and shares those skills as well.  His guiding business, Mullins Outfitters, has been a sponsor of CouesWhitetail.com for years and they have enjoyed amazing success in harvesting some of the largest elk in Arizona!  Thanks Jim for your support of CouesWhitetail.com!

  1. What is your name?  How about your user name in the forum and how did you choose it?

My name is Jim Mullins and my username is Coosefan.  I chose Coosefan first because although I know it’s pronounced “Cows”, I prefer to say “Coose”, and second because I am a fanatic about these gorgeous deer!

  1. What is your favorite part of CouesWhitetail.com (the forum, photogallery, recipes, hunt strategies section, etc,)?

A:  The forum is by far my favorite part.  I love reading the stories and seeing the pictures posted by other members. This forum is especially great during the summer when no hunts are going on, I can always get my “Coues” fix here!

  1. How did you first hear about CouesWhitetail.com?  How long have you been a member?

A: I’ve been a member since August of 2005, but had been a lurker for a while prior to that.  I had drawn a coues tag that year and with the excitement for that tag my every last thought was about Coues deer. I signed up with CWT.com then to help satisfy my desire for everything related to Coues and have been addicted to it ever since!

  1. How often do you visit the site?  How much time do you spent each visit and what do you do on the site?

A: I visit this site whenever I’m near the computer, even if I just happen to walk by I’ll jump on and see if there’s any new stories or pictures! Sometimes it’s just a quick glance, but I’ve been known to spend hours on here.  I mostly read through the different forums but I love being able to share my own stories and photos with everyone and do that every chance I get.

  1. Have you met any other members of the site?  Have you become friends with them and perhaps gone hunting with them?   Have you introduced some of your friends to CouesWhitetail.com?  Have you attended any of the CouesWhitetail.com Get-togethers?

A: Yes, I’ve met a bunch of great folks from this site.  The one thing I always tell people about CWT.com and what sets it apart from all other sites is the quality of it’s members.  For some reason this site attracts the quality of people that I like to be around and without a doubt these people are what makes the site what it is! I have become close friends with a few folks that I met from this site and most of my family and friends are now members and visit here often. Other than meeting up at banquets, I haven’t had the chance to attend any of the get-togethers, but I look forward to the day when I can.

  1. How long have you been hunting Coues deer?  Describe your favorite Coues Deer hunting memory.

A: I’ve been hunting these elusive critters since probably when I was 10 or 11. My dad, being an avid coues hunter, always put us in for coues hunts. Success was rare for us back then but I’ve got tons of memories and experience from those days. I can’t decide what my most memorable hunt would be, but one that stands out right now is one I shared with my dad recently. It was in Mexico and because of guiding duties I ended up with only 1 day to fill my tag. Dad had already taken a great 110” class buck and was with me on my 1 day hunt.  There was at least a foot of snow everywhere and seemed like 2 feet on the shady sides of the hills.  He and I snow plowed our way to the top of a mountain at first light.  We were greeted with several Goulds turkeys that were chest deep in the snow, full strut and gobbling!  It was an unusual sight but very neat. Shortly after that we found a good vantage and set up our glasses. It wasn’t but just a few minutes when I had a good buck in view. He was chasing a doe and soon to be out of sight. I set up quick, ranged the buck and hammered him!  I new he had a great frame, heavy and an inside kicker on one side.  Dad got to witness the whole event right by my side. I’ll never forget how I felt when I pulled that rack up out of the snow to see it up close for the first time! That buck was just under 110” and is still my biggest buck to date.

  1. Do you archery hunt Coues or rifle hunt or both?  Tell us about the equipment you use.

A: I do both but have yet to harvest a coues with my bow, and it’s not for a lack of trying! My bow is a Mathews DXT and my primary coues gun is a custom Rem. 700 .300 WinMag with a 6.5-20x50 VXIII scope.

  1. What other species do you enjoy hunting and where do you hunt them?

A:  I enjoy hunting anything, but if it’s not Coues, my next choice would be Elk. I’ve personally taken several archery bulls but my expertise has been helping others fill their tags on great bulls.  Ever since my first bull hunt at age 10 I’ve had a serious passion for hunting bull Elk. Guiding Elk hunters has helped satisfy my craving for hunting rutting bulls and I’ve been fortunate enough to have helped take some of the biggest.

9.  Now tell us some more about yourself.   Where do you live?  What type of work do you do (feel free to mention your business so other members can help support it)?   Tell us about your family.

A: I live in Buckeye, AZ, and help run the family guide and outfitting service which is Mullins Outfitters.  We’ve enjoyed awesome success and have had a lot of fun meeting new folks, spending quality time with friends and family and sharing new experiences over the years. I have no children at this time but am married to a wonderful girl who teaches kindergarten. She learned long ago what she was getting into by marrying me but still has always been supportive and allows me to follow my dreams, even if that means being gone for 150+ days a year!!!

  1.  Is there something we forgot to ask?  What’s your favorite hunting quote?  Favorite hunting book?

A: My favorite hunting quote would be “Life is short, hunt hard”.  But, I do like Shortpant’s quote, “If you’re not questioning your sanity, your not hunting hard enough”!
