CouesWhitetail.com Member Spotlight:
Scott Adams
Editor's note: I have known Scott and his
wonderful family for several years now and I must say it's a real pleasure to
spend time with them. Scott is one of the best Coues hunters I know and I
love hunting with him. Scott is a regular mountain goat and you won't
believe the size of the binos he glasses with (30x!). Thanks for
supporting CouesWhitetail.com and I hope for many more years of hunting with
you.
What is your name? How about your user name in the
forum and how did you choose it?
Scott Adams. I’m not much into “handles” so I just use my real name.
What is your favorite part of CouesWhitetail.com (the
forum, photogallery, recipes, hunt strategies section, etc,)?
Definitely the forum! The rest of the site is
great but I find myself checking the forums daily and only every week or two
for the regular site.
How did you first hear about CouesWhitetail.com? How
long have you been a member?
I was a
regular on MonsterMuleys and they had just started a Coues section and I heard
about this new site on there. That was back in the spring of ’03. Wow! Has
it been that long!?
How often do you visit the site? How much time do you
spent each visit and what do you do on the site?
I usually visit every day but on days off I get busy sometimes and may go a
day or two without tapping in. How long I visit depends on my mood.
Sometimes I just scan through real quick, mark the forums as read and leave.
Sometimes I’ll spend 30 or 40 minutes reading. I’ve slowed down a lot on my
posting compared to several years ago but I’m still here regularly.
Have you met any other members of the site?
Yes, I’ve met quite a few members of CWT over the years. Have you become friends with them and perhaps gone hunting with them?
I’ve become friends with several and have hunted
with 4 or 5 including Amanda who I hunt with every year.
Have you introduced some of your friends to CouesWhitetail.com?
I’ve turned quite a few people onto the site. It
usually starts when someone has heard about a big Coues buck being killed and
wants to see a picture. I just pull up the site and Bingo! They’re hooked. Have you attended any of the CouesWhitetail.com Get-togethers?I’ve only attended one and that was just recently
at Jim Reynolds’s house.
How long have you been hunting Coues deer?
I killed my first Coues deer in 1987 in unit 27 on the
upper Blue River and believe it or not, did not realize I’d killed a Coues
deer until I was looking at pictures of it a few years later. (How
embarrassing!). It was an “any antlered deer” hunt. In those days I just
walked through the forest with a pair of $30 Bushnells around my neck and shot
the first deer with horns. I started hunting specifically for Coues deer in
1990 after visiting with my cousin Duwane, who told me I needed to take the
next step up in hunting.
Describe your favorite Coues Deer hunting memory.
This is a tough one but I think it was back in
1996 when my friend Randy Barnes and I backpacked 3 miles into an area and
Randy killed a monster 118 inch nontypical after working in him all day. Well
no, maybe in 1997 when California banker John Primasing took a 123 inch
typical Coues buck. We backpacked in 5 miles through 18 inches of snow. John
shot this monster buck right after we watched the buck breed a doe. You can
read these stories in my cousin Duwane’s book.Actually, it has to be this year when I
finally scored on a big one with Amanda, my friend Trent and my son James and
his friend Joey helping me locate this 124 inch buck that I’d shot at the
previous Oct., glassed up and photographed that previous December and had
numerous photos of him this summer as he grew this massive set of antlers!
To me the big ones are always memorable.

Do you archery hunt Coues or rifle hunt or both?
I primarily hunt with a rifle and have only been out for Coues deer twice with
a bow. I’m trying to start bow hunting again but am having a hard time
getting myself kick-started. Tell us about the equipment you use.
My rifle is a custom
built Savage 110 chambered for the 6.5 WSM. The scope is a Leupold
6.5-20x40 Long Range.
I glass primarily using
30x80 Docters mounted on a Bogen tripod. I carry a pair of 10x40 Zeiss in a
Jaret Owens bino pouch. I also have a set of 15x60 Zeiss and Leupold 12-40
spotting scope that I use occasionally.
My backpack is a Kifaru
Longhunter that I’ve used for almost 15 years. It’s been completely
replaced once, free of charge of course. I literally wore out the original
one.
I’ve used Meindl Canadian
boots since 1996.
I’ve recently added trail
cameras to my tool bag and use the
DLC Covert II’s that Amanda sells on the site. I currently have 3. I
still like to get out and scout by hiking and glassing but the cameras give
me a little extra on determining just what’s running in my neck of the woods
as well as an up close and personal look.
Lastly, I always carry my
6 ½ ft. Moses stick to steady myself and to steady my 10x40 Zeiss when I
glass while hiking.
8. What other species do you
enjoy hunting and where do you hunt them? I really
enjoy archery hunting bull elk in the rut. I hunt them in unit 1 and 27. I
hunt bears here in unit 27 every now and then.
Now tell us some more about yourself. Where do you
live? I live in
Southeastern Arizona in Greenlee County, about 7 miles east of Clifton as the
crow flies. We have a large home on 40 acres that abuts the Apache Sitgreaves
National Forest. What type of work do you do (feel free to mention your business so
other members can help support it)?
I’m a supervisor in the Freeport McMoran copper mine in
Morenci. I’ve been there almost 20 years.
Tell us about your family. I have a beautiful
wife, Ronda and we’ll be celebrating our 25 wedding anniversary this summer.
We have 2 sons, James 21 and Austin 19 and both are hardcore hunters (Ronda
says I’ve ruined them). As a matter of fact as I write this I just received a
phone call that they have an archery killed javelina down about 2 miles from
the house.
Is there something we forgot to ask? What’s your
favorite hunting quote? Favorite hunting book?
I guided some back in the 90’s but to me guiding seemed to take a lot of the
fun out of hunting so right now I just hunt with family and friends. I really
enjoy trophy hunting and pursuing the big, old, experienced bucks. It adds a
whole new dimension and challenge to the chase. And when it all comes
together…What a rush!!
