Tripods and tripod heads
CouesWhitetail.com has teamed up with Jim White to offer you some
excellent tripods, adapters, and tripod heads. Jim lives in Arizona and
has some outstanding equipment specifically for hunting big game in the
Southwest. The tripods offered below
are the ones that Jim recommends for Coues Deer hunters. Duwane Adams also
recommends the Jim White tripod head and the Velbon Chaser series tripods in his
latest book "How to Hunt Coues Deer."

This is the machined aluminum tripod head created for
hunters who glass a lot. It is
lightweight (14 oz. with plate installed). It is just 3 1/4
inches tall and is 2x2 inches at the top. All components are machined
in the USA from 6061-T6 aluminum and are anodized to prevent wear and
corrosion. There are also 1/2 size plates available that work well
when using a 35 mm camera or binocular tripod adaptor. It has
excellent features that make for very effective glassing such as sealed ball
bearings for extremely smooth panning and a quick release plate system for
switching optics without losing the chosen field of view.
You may need an adapter to attach your binoculars to the plate on this
tripod head. Email me and we can figure out which adapter you need.
Jim White unconditionally warranties this tripod head for the life of the
product. If something goes wrong with it, he will fix it or replace it
at no charge.
This head will fit onto any tripod that has a screw in the center column
for this to attach to. It can be made to fit a 1/4 inch or a 3/8 inch
diameter screw. If you are unsure whether this head will fit your
tripod, email me and we can find out.

This tripod head will fit on all tripods sold on this page.
You can purchase extra plates so that you can keep one on your binoculars
and one on your spotting scope for easy switching of optics.
"I use the Uni-Daptor tripod head because it is lightweight, yet
rugged. The head is also very smooth and the adjustments are positive.
When adjusted properly, I can move my binoculars on the tripod smoothly to
follow a feeding animal. It is also small, allowing me to leave the
head attached to my tripod while carrying them on my pack. In addition
they provide two types of quick-release plates that I find invaluable to
attach to my binoculars or camera." Quote from Lance Stapleton, avid
deer hunter and author of the book "Deer Quest".
Jim White Tripod head is $255 plus tax and $14 shipping/handling (this
item ships for free if you also order any of the tripods listed on this page).
Tripod head includes 1 full-sized plate for attaching optics (shown above).
If you don't have a thread hole in your binoculars, then you will most
likely need an adapter to connect them to the plate. To figure out which
adapter you may need,
email me.
Please include a note about the type of tripod you will be putting
this head on so we can make sure the screw adapter is correct for your
tripod.
Extra plates cost $18.00 plus tax and add no more to the shipping cost. You can
buy 1/2 sized plates or the full-sized plate (shown above). The
half-size plate provides good stability for binoculars or cameras. The
full-sized plate is good for spotting scopes.

Jim White Panning Attachment
The Jim White panning attachment allows easy
side to side panning when use in combination with a ball head or pistol
grip. Some
hunters who use a tripod for effective glassing say they like either a
ball/pistol grip head or a pan head but at times wish they had the
features of both. The ball or pistol grip head fans like the feature
that allows you to quickly scan the terrain from left to right and up
and down with a single motion. The hunters who enjoy a typical pan head
like the more disciplined approach of panning right or left while locked
on an elevation covering the terrain in a grid pattern. This new product
from Jim White allows you to glass in either fashion.
The panning
attachment is machined from 6061 T-6 aluminum, uses sealed ball bearings
and a bronze tipped panning control knob. There is also a bronze tipped
set screw that allows you to set some light drag on the unit to prevent
it from spinning freely when the panning control knob is in the open
position.
The unit
weighs in at a minute 3.6 oz. and is only 1.5 inches tall.
It is also
available mounted to a light weight ball head (see photo below).
That matched unit, with the ball head and panning attachment, weighs
only 8.6 oz and stands only 4.75 inches

If the Jim White tripod head is a bit
out of your price range and you would rather have a regular panning tripod
head, a good option is the Velbon 157 or 157Q tripod
head.
This tripod head will fit on any tripod on this page. I suggest the
157Q since it has the quick release plate system. A combination that
several hunters have chosen is to put the 157Q on the Slik Sprint Mini or
Slik Sprint Pro. The 157Q has the quick release plate system and if
you order that one, you will probably want a few extra plates to put on your
other optics so you can change between them quickly in the field. The
157Q comes with one plate, but if you want more, order extras. The
tripod head weighs 1 lb 4 oz.
Velbon PH-157Q tripod head costs $47.50 plus $14
shipping/handling.

July 2006 - Velbon has come out with new models of tripods that replace
their old Chaser EFL 3a and 4a.
The new models are called Sherpas and are very similar to the old Chaser
series. The Sherpa 750RA is a replacement for the EFL4A and the major
difference is that it now has a geared center column. The Sherpa 600RA
is practically identical to the EFL3A but is a different color now.
Velbon Sherpa 750RA
This tripod has 4 leg sections and extends to a height of 57". It
collapses to 17.5 inches. Weight: 3 lbs. 7 oz. This tripod has a
geared center column for raising and lowering whatever optics you put on the
tripod. The center column also unscrews as you can see in the last
photo to allow the tripod to get very low to the ground if needed.
This tripod comes without a tripod head. This is an excellent tripod.
Very stable and fairly lightweight for it's size.
To order a Velbon Sherpa 750RA, click on the paypal buttons below.
Cost is $135 plus tax and $14 shipping. This tripod does not come with
a tripod head (legs only).
Velbon Sherpa 600RA
This tripod has three leg sections and extends to a full height of 62
inches. It collapses to 21 inches and has a weight of 3 lbs. 2.6 oz.
This tripod does not have a geared center column, but you can raise and
lower the column manually. The column also unscrews so you can get the
tripod every low to the ground as shown in the last photo. Because
this tripod is taller than the 750, you can glass standing up better with
this one. This tripod comes without a tripod head. This is an
excellent tripod. Very stable and fairly lightweight for it's size.
To Order the Velbon 600RA click on the paypal buttons below.
Cost is $135 plus tax and $14 shipping. This tripod does not come with
a tripod head (legs only).
SLIK Sprint PRO Tripod
The SLIK Sprint PRO is a good
choice for a lightweight tripod. It has a maximum height of 64.3
inches and a folding height of 18 3/4 inches. The middle column is a
two-piece setup so you can remove part of it to make the tripod get low on
the ground (as in the second photo shown above). This tripod has 3
position multi-angle leg locks so that it can be spread out. This
tripod does not come with a tripod head, you will have to order that
separately.
The weight on this tripod is 1 pound and
15.5 ounces. It comes in gun metal grey and with a nylon carrying case.
The SLIK Sprint PRO is $95.00 plus tax and $14 shipping/handling.
If you want to pay by check, send me an
email and I will let you know
the total and where to send it.
SLIK Sprint Mini
This lightweight tripod has
all the features of the SLIK Sprint PRO except that it is shorter. So you
won't be able to glass standing up very easily with this one. The
maximum extended height is 43.5 inches and it is 14 inches when folded up.
The weight of the tripod is 1 pound and 10 ounces. It has the same leg
angle locks, removable center column piece, and the ball head that the
larger SLIK Sprint PRO has. This tripod has legs that are adjustable
with regard to the outward spread (see photo above). This tripod does
not come with the tripod head, you will have to order one seperately.
The SLIK Sprint Mini Tripod is $86.00 plus tax and $14
shipping/handling. If you
want to pay by check, send me an
email and I will let you know the total and where to send it.
