Coues right?

Recommended Posts

I went to check the cameras and I was VERY surprised to these girls. I had no problem saying Coues, but when I asked around I got mixed opinions. I'm convinced the trail cam pictures are of coues does. The mule deer up there are tan (I took the mule deer picture a couple days ago). These deer on the trail cam are gray, the halo, the tails, etc. I did lighten the trail cam pics because they were dark. I've yet to see a Coues up that high and this is a first on trail cam. I've been using the general area for about 10 years now. I'm happy to see them.

Looks like coues to me I'm not a expert but usually that white butt is a giveaway. (Flag). Also their ears look pretty small oppose to large like muley.

to be honest - I think it may be a hybrid -

the tail is deceiving- rarely do you see the black at the top and the tip of coues and it doesn't have the white hair -

if she wagged/flagged that thing nobody would see squat!!

and look at the size of them ears - huge compared to her face -

I'm gonna have to disagree, respectfully of course, I always look at the tail but in this case you can also look at the face, this doe has the tell tail sign of the white ring around her nose and white underside of the chin. I say coues 100%, my 2 cents anyways.

The top two pics are of a mule deer the OP took pics of for comparison.

Now that we've agreed the bottom two are coues and the top two are Muleys. We can use these same photos for a question I had.

Do Coues get a summer coat like Muleys? In the top two picks you can see how brown the Muley coat is. Come fall that coat will be totally gray. I don't have as much experience with coues, but do their coats have such a drastic change during the summer?
