Illinois - I got a tag!

Recommended Posts

It's been an interesting process applying for an out of state hunt. I received the good news yesterday that I was drawn for an Illinois archery doe & buck tag.

It will be a DIY public land hunt with my cousin and my first out of state hunt.

Just curious as to what part of Illinois you'll be hunting for a draw tag? I go back to Illinois every year an hunt Brown County area and the permits are over the counter for buck and doe (no limit on doe permits). Good luck on your hunt it's a blast and there's a lot of awesome deer hunting with lots of big bucks running around!

Nice good luck, Christina, my inlaws have a bunch of farm ground outside of Bloomington/normal. I got drawn for the buck and a doe hunt last year but they were hit hard last year with the blue tongue and the numbers were way down. This year they are rebounding nicely due to the tons of rain they are having. I Get daily game trail camera pics sent to me of some nice white tails. Get ready for a whole new style of hunting

We've talked about down south. I do not have the exact details. My cousin is making the plans.

This process is entirely new to me. I have never hunted out of state. I followed the directions online. I could not buy a guaranteed tag, I had to go through what they called a draw and there was a deadline. I questioned it every step of the way because I didn't think there was a draw either. It's an Illinois archery non-resident either sex & antlerless tag.

Do they have a ton of tags leftover after the draw and then it goes OTC? Possibly. Honestly their website was not very informative. It got the job done, but I like AZ's much better.

The doe tag was under $30 if I remember correctly and OTC.

Piece of advice if you are hunting from a tree stand in Illinois: bend at the waist when you got to shoot. Its common to just drop your arms down, but that affects your aiming point. In 2011, I hunted a family farm back in Iowa and I missed one doe and almost missed the buck in my avatar because I got caught up in the moment and just dropped my bow arm to aim and forgot to bend at the waist. Draw normal and then bend at the waist! Its a whole different style of hunting, but I fell in love with sitting 20' up while the woods came alive! Can't wait to go back in 2015! Good luck!

I think Illinois archery is OTC. but shotgun or muzzle loader is done through a draw. Although I could be wrong seeing how my dad always filled that stuff out for me.

No, illinois is a draw state for nonresidents, be it archery, shotgun or muzzleloader.

Usually the archery draw is a guaranteed tag, leftovers are otc until gone.

shotgun and muzzleloader is a draw for specific county's and depending on the county could be easy to draw or next to impossible.

Either way its a great state to hunt and giants fall every year in public land.

I have a 200" buck on video I took back in '08 on public land and seen him 4 times from my treestand but could not close the deal.

also I saw a 240+" on a different piece of public land but he was elusive and never seen him again.

......I need to go back but my son keeps drawing coues tags.. lol

Very cool, good luck. I would imagine that public land worth hunting is a pretty hot commodity during the season in Illinois compared to AZ. Hope you have someone that can do some scouting for you and you can find a little piece of paradise all to yourself. Have fun!
