Back from San Diego

Recommended Posts

Well I'm back from a quick trip over to San Diego to fish for Yellow fin. Had a pretty darn good time and caught a few fish. A friend of mine set up a private charter with a friend of his that is part owner of the Invicta out of H&M Landing. He then got a group of us together for a 2 1/2 day trip. The first morning we got into a couple of frenzies that were just absolutely crazy! By 10:30 am we had 79 fish boated. Unfortunately at this time one of the guys helping out (not a true deck hand) fell and broke his ankle so we were done for day one. By the time we got back to where we were slaying them the previous day the majority of our bait was in bad shape and we counted 35 boats in the general area. We decided to take a gamble and head out to find some areas a little less crowded. All in all it was a great trip with 140 yellow fin, 5 skip jacks, and 1 Dorado for our total count. Richard and the entire crew were great and I will definitely be returning next year.

Nice report! Thanks for sharing with us landlocked types. Those skipjack tuna are some of the best fish for sashimi I've ever had.

Phil, that's some good eats right there! one of my favorite fish to eat. bummer about the guy breaking his ankle. no bluefin? you had 20 anglers on the trip? how big was the jackpot fish? have you ever caught a tuna before and if not, did you eat the heart? thanks for posting a report of your trip. Chris.

Chris,

Blue fin was closed at the time, they have been opening and closing the taking of them all season. Yeah on the 20, started as 22 but two guys bailed. The jackpot was high 20's but don't remember the exact weight. Yes I've caught tuna before and yest I've eaten the heart from the first.

yea heat. you can have the skippy-coastwise known as 'good eatin'-and i'll take the yellowfin, bigeye, bluefin, albacore, yellowtail and dorado that you don't want......sashimi'd, ceviche'd, sear'd, grill'd or kabob'd.

good trip and a serious boat. looks well taken care of. who's the owner/skipper?

Phil,

I think my neighbor Keith Paffrath was on this trip. I loaned him a couple of my rods and reels. Looks like you guys had a great trip on a nice boat. It is really nice fishing with people you know on a limited load. The fishing this year has been off the charts good. Thank you for sharing.

The owner is Richard Allen, the captain was named Chris but can't remember his last name.

Darr,

We had a blast and the limited load is/was great. I am happy to say I was there during this year's season! I enjoyed your recap of your trip as well.

Thanks guys.

I hope conditions are good next year! I picked the wrong year to procrastinate going on a tuna trip!

I have the time just not the $. I have the problem of coming up with new ideas all the time but never enough money for all of them. I have my elk tag so I am greatful. Next year tuna boats and Utah otc elk are gonna be my goals.

Nice. Glad you got into them. Great pictures and report.

Skipjack are outstanding(as catfish bait). I love all those other fish on my plate. Still eating yellowfin from my trip in early Aug.
