Didn't see a post saying you had made a purchase yet, so I figured I'd chime in. I'm a big fan of Sitka for the layering aspect. Best example I can provide is a day when I was up north for the January archery hunt. In the morning sitting on the ridge it was extremely windy and in the low single digits. I was wearing: Traverse Hoodie, Kelvin Vest, Jetstream Jacket, Traverse Pant, Kelvin Pant, 90% Pant, Blizzard Beanie, Neck Gaiter, Jetstream Gloves, Smartwool Socks and Schnee's Beartooth Uninsulated boots. I was extremely comfortable. The only part of me that got cold were my feet and hands, which I chalk up to the heavy winds. I plan to get some Schnee's pack boots that are insulated to fix the cold feet issue. As the sun popped up and the wind stopped, I very quickly and easily stripped off some of the layers (temp hit mid 50's) and remaimed comfortable. I hear great things about Kuiu but have no personal experience. Given that it was founded by the same guys as Sitka I can imagine they are very similar. I wouldn't rule out Under Armor gear also. I know a buddy of mine in Wyoming who guides loves their gear too. Haven't tried the new First Lite stuff, but a few years ago that stuff drove me crazy as it was very itchy. I chalked it up to sensitive skin, but my wife felt the same and she never complains about material. Hope that helps somewhat.

For cold weather hunts up north, I run Smartwool base layers top (t-shirt, long sleeve) and bottoms. Then I will but on some 5.11 pants. Smartwool merino wool hiking socks and 400gr boots. Then I use the Cabelas micro suede turtleneck and either a mountain hardware fleece jacket or a North Face down puffy jacket. A fleece beene and merino gloves. If it is really cold I have mitts that go over my gloves for glassing in the cold wind. With this system I can take off or put on clothes and am still relatively light. Works from 80 deg F to about 10 deg F. Any more I though in some insulated pants. Look into Sierra Trading Post, they always have some sort of sale going on if you are on there email list.

Awesome appreciate your guys input. I usually hunt the border units around late November to December and weather there ain't as cold as up north but still could get some what nippy some days. But I recently purchased Sitka's 90% pants and a long sleeve core shirt because I got a deal on the two. I'm thinking of adding the new cold weather transverse shirt to the collection. I was leaning towards merino wool gear but I'm sure Sitka could do the job. But I'm looking to still add/try out some other brand ect to see what works the best. So any one got any more input it would really be appreciated. Also anyone have any reviews on the new kuiu Teton gear that just came out. Also could you guys help me out with a question how much pairs of shirts, pants jackets do you buy? I would think with underwear and socks I would need one for each day of hunt but for shirts and pants I wouldn't think so but have no experience with the higher end clothing. I would be hunting for around 5-10 days possibly more if I draw late December coues tag.

All my outdoor clothing wicks moisture, and dries quickly. I use wool socks, and under armor base layer, make sure you don't use cotton underwear. for pants Cabelas micro Tex, or 5.11, I also have a non-insulated pair of gore-Tex fleece pants for sub-zero weather. I use a micro-tex or a fleece shirt, a fleece vest or jacket or both depending on the weather, and my outer layer is Cabelas MT050 rain gear, I love this rain gear. Their Rain Suede Dry Plus is also good, but not the equal of mt 50, and gore-tex insulated or wool gloves. Most of this gear came from their bargain barn. It works from 75 down to -10 in Colorado and I haven't felt the need to up grade any thing. One item most people don't use are gaiters, Outdoor research Gore-Tex gaiters are the ones I have, but if they don't go up to just below the knee I wont use them. You can hunt in jeans and be drier, and warmer than the guy with the most expensive gore-Tex pants and no gaiters. As the temperature drops your pants will freeze solid without gaiters. As for boots I have Cabelas older Canadian hunter insulated, for heavy backpacking in rough steep country these have few equals.

Cabelas is having a sale on base layers right now.
