Turkey/predator hunting

Recommended Posts

Not sure if this is in the right forum or not :) but went out turkey hunting with a buddy of mine and his son this weekend on the Jr hunt. Last year I had a turkey tag in the same unit and we called in 3 coyotes while we were calling for turkey's. So this year I said I was going to be ready and took my AR along. Sure enough this guy made the mistake of coming in. I gave him a challenge call and he came flying in the rest of the way.

Nice work. Aman (Little Creek Calls) in his turkey workshop talked about wearing "aqua velvet" to keep the predators out of one's turkey stand. Said he's brang coyotes in and bears for that matter trying to entice birds to come out.

---

Took my buddy for his first ever turkey hunt in 22 last year for fall bird. Left late due to work/etc and had camp set up about 10pm. Out drinking a beer, discussing strategies and the 'yotes lit up. Well with everything out and ready I grabbed my box call. brang the coyotes in to the edge of the darkness before they busted us and took off. That's when the new guy went to sleep. ha ha

Nice. If your out hunting turkeys, most equipment including the shotgun, is predator ready as long as they aren't out of the guns range. Nice lil bonus to have while hunting another animal.

If any of you knew Marvin Robbins or attended any of his seminars you might remember that he wore allot of after shave. It was the same smelly brand that my grandfather used Aqua Velva. In one or two of his seminars that I had attended he told us it was a good way to keep predators from coming in to close to your calling setups. He also taught that turkeys have a great sense of smell but just use it to find food and water and are not smart enough to use it in defense. I have not yet tried his practice of using after shave. I have called in multiple coyotes and 1 bear while trying to call in turkeys.
