Dear max point holders,........

Recommended Posts

I personally would like the current bonus point system to be done away with. I say do away with the max point system and just run the whole thing like the 1&2 pass. I feel like the max point pass makes is feel that eventually we should be garenteed a tag and the reality with species like sheep that's probably just not possible.

+1 on that. I just donated another $13 for not a chance with 20 points.

If I'm reading the Pass 1 & 2 right, 59 hunters in 2014 draw, got a tag with 15 pts or less.

13 hunters had 5 pts or less.

As BoneCollector777 said on the first page of this thread, the original poster's comments just don't hold much water. This year there are 105 sheep tags, so 20% of them or 21 tags, will go to the max point holders. That would be true no matter how many people have the max of 27 points or how many of them apply to the popular or less popular units.

There are approximately 105 hunters with 27 points going into the 2016 draw. If all 105 put in for various units like the OP suggested, it would take 5-6 years before a single person in the next lower group would receive a tag in the max point round. Conversely, if all 105 of them put in for 22 and 24BS, only 3 would draw and the other 18 max point pool tags would go to the hunters in the next lower group (26 points) THIS YEAR! for that reason, the OP's logic of asking them all to apply for lesser units just doesn't make a great deal of sense if the true object is to get the max point tags to fall to the people with fewer points in a shorter amount of time. The only reason it might have any weight is if he is one or two points from max points and wants to only draw 22 or 24BS. Then, it might be in his best interest to get the others with max points to put in for other units, but not at all for the reasons he states in his post.

I honestly think it's just a luck of the draw system. I don't believe in the bonus point statistics game and fish provides. I have 17 or 18 points for antelope and can't get drawn , but I had 4 points for bighorn and pulled a unit 27 tag this year. It's unbelievable that people have so many points and I got a tag over them. I don't think it's fair but I am stoked about this tag.

18 points is nothing for antelope. When you get to 24 then you're in the game. Every year more people get lucky than those that draw with Max so consider yourself insanely lucky to get that rocky tag. Should be a fun one.

Congratulations on the Rocky tag! I'm hoping to get hit with that lightning of luck for Rocky some day too...since I'm applying next year with only two points...

I had 18 points and drew antelope this year. I drew a Rocky tag 6years ago and drew my desert tag 30 years ago on my third try and drew a strip rifle tag 9 years ago. There is a lot of luck involved.

2002 early rifle elk

2007 strip rifle

2010 Rocky tag

2016 rifle antelope

1986 desert sheep

keep trying I hope you all get to go sheep hunting

Just read this topic and was thinking that many do not understand how the "bonus" round works. Please see Stickflickers post a few above. He has it right. They give out 20% of the tags in the bonus round. They do not all have to go to those with the maximum possible points.

To take a VERY extreme example. If EVERYONE with 27 point and 26 points and all the way down to 3 points put in for only unit 22 and there were 2 tags in 22, the other part of the 20% in the bonus round would go to people with 2 points. I know that's absurd, but it is just to illustrate the point. I fully expect that this year or next, somebody with 1 less than the max possible will get a tag.

To look at in a slightly different way, but to illustrate the point, take elk tags. Unlike sheep there is a "bonus" round for each hunt. For the rut rifle hunts it takes about 19-20 points to get drawn in the bonus round. For a cow tag it takes only about 5. Even tho sheep is on a genus basis, it is a bit similar in that those who insist on putting in for 22 with "max" points will still be waiting while folks with a point less will be getting draw for the Cabeza in the bonus round.

I think people are pointing fingers at the wrong source. I like the "luck" of the draw. LOL

Increasing sheep and antelope numbers should be more of a focus for Game and Fish that would eventually increase

tag numbers (I know it wont ever keep with demand for tags). Of the few areas of the state where sheep have been

introduced (or re-introduced) management hasn't been what it should be. Every biologist knows in order for a new population

to be successful the habitat has to be as prime as possible to make for vigorous sheep (or antelope). There also needs to be an

over harvest of all predators in these areas before the animals are released and even more of a aggressive

whacking and stacking of predators before fawns and lambs are dropped. Recruitment has to be high every year for success.

Looking at years of the Game and Fish numbers don't really reflect a steady increase in sheep and antelope numbers, it seems to be stagnant (Rockies in Morenci may be a exception). Hopefully bureaucracy wont stand in the way of this. LOL

It is BS. as is. It should be more like 50% in the 1,2 pass instead of 20. Why ? to move things along. Why ? Cause old farts like me with now 24 sheep points may never draw in my life ,and people put there wives and kids in who really arn't hunters and draw with 3-4-5 points. This is for all species Too. Iv'e known a guy who had 3 rifle antelope tags in 5 years. I ,1 in 27 years. If its a bonus point system then make it a real one. I believe Wyoming does 50 or 60 % of max point holders. My OP. Luv it or shuv it..............BOB!
