Unit 9 early rifle

Recommended Posts

Great tag! I hunted 9 sept archery in 2014 and never had stepped foot in the unit before. Living in Tucson and with work I was only able to scout 15 total days before my hunt. But in those 15 days I covered most the unit putting a couple thousand miles on my truck and a ton of miles on my boots plus lots of hours behind the glass. If you scout and hit it hard you will be successful. I killed a 349" 5X6 bull on day 3 of my hunt. If you scout hard you will be successful. Pre season is the season. The hunt is the experience. Best advise find wallows close to season and find the concentrated cow herds early. Catch to this hunt is g@f giving the rifle hunters the early September days... You'll be lucky if the rut is going during the hunt dates. Bring the big glass. Be prepared for some silent days and a lot of glassing. Good luck.

Doesn't this hunt start on September 30th? No bugling/rut going on at that time... Is that correct?
my mistake it's the 23rd--29th this year. I gave some wrong information. I thought the rifle hunt was before the archery hunt again this year like last year. My mistake. Let me change it. The Bulls will be talking. Other than that still bring the big glass and prepare to hunt hard for a big one. Just because you have a 9 tag doesn't mean they are behind every tree. Still going to have to work for the big ones

I bought her a lightweight Husqvarna in 30-06 so she's decided not to try the muzzle loader. Thanks to everyone for your input. I'll report on her hunt with details that, hopefully, will help others who are lucky enough to draw this unit.

Hunt either the West side in the northern part of the unit for the biggest bulls in the unit or the East side upper basin area will also hold the biggest bulls in that unit. Bulls should be ripping at that time and shouldn't need to use big glass with the bulls rutting. Good luck

There have been a few lightning caused fires so far this summer, so check on green-ups and where the cows are, now that the rains have started. Make it a fun hunt.

Only problem I can see with her wanting to do it with a muzzleloader is trying to take a follow up shot. Most the country in that unit is gonna put you in tight quarters with the elk anyway. Not many places where you can take a long shot.

I think a muzzleloader is do-able, and I hate muzzleloaders!
