After the trigger is pulled

Recommended Posts

Just a few questions to those who have hunted on Kaibab, as well as had success.

Where can you get a shower?

Any GPS coordinates for cell service?

Recommendation on meat processors. Taking meat to a Utah processor is an option if the processor has an excellent reputation for quality work.

Anyone use the Carabou brand game bags or other brands?

Anyone send their hides directly to a tanner they would recommend? I will not be doing a mount, but would like to have the hide tanned with hair on. My brother is a trapper and will be able to flesh properly.

Any recommendation for items you were glad you had with you or recommend taking?

Anyone have a video on breaking down your bison on he ground. I have skinned, quartered and packed out deer and elk but I am always open to hints and tips.

Thanks in advance Phil

Hi Phil,

Phone and showers down at the Grand Canyon National Park. Cell phone service at the Grand Canyon Lodge area, and shower and laundry at the Campground. 6 Quarters for a 6 minute shower. WELL worth it! I heard you can get phone service at the end of Fire Point but never went that way on my trip. You can also head north on the Highway to the Telephone Hill area and maybe get a call out. Russ Jacoby and crew had 2 satellite phones that they didn't mind people using.

I bought some Caribou Gear game bags about 4 or 5 years ago in the Bargain Cave at Cabela's and they have been a worthy investment. They can be reused over and over and are very durable. I really like those. I hear there is a good processor in Fredonia but don't have a contact. I used Casey's in Flagstaff on this go round. So far so good. A cow will be a lot like a bull elk but with longer hair.

One final word of warning...watch your snacks when you are in the blind. Ground squirrels were quite bold and would come right in and try to steal stuff! Keeps you on your toes! LOL!

Thanks guys for the information so far.

Nick my wife thinks I already have enough guns. I have been itching for a short range weasel gun, guess I now have a good reason now.

What do you recommend for Ground squirrels Solids or Soft Points? LOL

Dad killed his in 09' and he used Lance w/ Timberland Outfitters, Russ Jacoby was with us when he killed, he was helping Timberland at the time but I think they have split. Both are top notch dudes in my opinion and very knowledgeable in the ways of the tatonka. The story is on here somewhere in the buffalo hunting forum. Anyways, it all depends on the time of year your hunting, dad killed his in February. It died next to a snow pile, gutless method, take a chunk off throw it in the snow kind of deal, no game bags just a couple big duffle bags. My dad went to AZ Cutlery on Cave Creek road just north of Thunderbird and asked the guy what someone should use if breaking down a "cow sized" (buffs are not cows trust me) animal. Guy sold him a couple different style commercial grade kitchen knives. The simple kind, plastic handle, longer flexible blades, easily sharpened, they worked great. Plus I think a smaller Havalon would work wonders on the skull. We camped on the North Rim but had cell service at Jacobs Lake, might be better by now. We took the meat,675lbs de-bonded,to Casey's in Flagstaff but it was cold. The bull was aged around 8 years by Game& Fish, 50/50 on taste. Premium cuts good, burger good, sausage good, not much else though. However,I do not think that was Casey's fault just an older grittier bull. I was glad we had quads (to haul meat),a good set of radios, good boots and a great GPS. We used the Garmin 60csx at the time which is now the 64s. We drove the hide, which we capped for a full body, straight back to Phoenix to Desert Edge Taxidermy, Josh is an excellent dude, very dependable, and a Goodyear cop as well. He killed the shoulder mount and dad is still threatening to have the back half made into a vest. The gutless method worked great but we had 6 guys helping, holding legs, sharpening knives, de-boning, capping etc. From time of shot to time we were back at camp with everything was right at 4 hours. It helps to have help ! If you have any questions about our hunt shot me a pm with your number and I'll try to get you in touch with dad. He is always willing to help a buffalo hunter as it was always his dream to hunt them! Either way good luck & shot straight !

LaCortis (928) 643-6126. My dad took his antelope from 13A there and he did a good job. He was recommended by the unit manager. Had a clean shop with lots of options for sausage and jerky.

Knifemerchant.com has some really good prices too but it would be great if there were sheaths available for them. What is a 2 sided steel? All I have seen are the long skinny ones.
