Question on Tikka T3 and .243 loads

I am trying to build up my 11 year-old son's .243 Tikka T3.

I was wondering if anybody has used a Mountain Tactical Picatinny Rail 20MOA?

It seems like it very well built and it has recoil lug that many other companies do not offer.

Any other suggestions will be appreciated .

 

Another questions is about loads. My son is going on a Elk hunt in Dec and has been practicing with a 58gr varmint load that is very accurate up to 200yds.

Now that he has been shooting with 100gr the gun does not seem to like this load as much. Anybody here has any experience with a Tikka .243 making loads that can take down an Elk thats accurate? If so I would love to buy 2 boxes if that is possible.

 

( I might want to ad this before I get a lot of bad comments about .243 being too light of a load for an Elk. He has been shooting my .308 for anything pass 200yds. However if the shot is close and needs to be quick he will need to have his rifle in hand. My rifle is to heavy for him, it will be used only for prone shooting or on a tripod. )

Check on the twist rate to make sure it can handle the 100 grain bullet

I had a tikka in 243 that loved the federal blue box ammo. It was the cheapest stuff you could buy at sportsmans. It was 100 soft point I think. Not sure it would be the best choice of bullet for elk, but if he makes a good shot I'm sure it would work.

If you're not reloading yourself, try a box of good old Remington Core-Lokt. Good stuff right there. Like others have said, check your barrel twist rate as well. If it's 1:10 (which most 243s are), you'll want to stick to 95 grs or less as a general rule of thumb. A 95gr Core-lokt is good elk medicine for a younger shooter. Double lung it and you've got a dead elk. I know a lot of women that shoot 243's for elk (for the lower recoil), and they have killed a lot of them. Before I reloaded I shot the Core-Lokt, and it was a great shooter out of my Howa.

I would try the Remington or hornandy American whitetail they have it in 100 gr sp and 95gr sst

I have a tikka in 243 my son used 95 gr sst for a couple nice mule deer.

I love tikka rifles and think they are extremely accurate out of the box

 

Not sure the sst is the right bullet for an elk though. Maybe use this load for nosler accubond

I have a buddy that shoots one too and might have some heavier loads

 

I'm not going to say the 243 won't work but I would suggest a stout bullet. Maybe a Barnes ttsx would work.
