Arrow setup for Elk

Recommended Posts

Drew an early archery bull hunt. What are your guys running for an arrow setup?

Arrow?

Weight?

Broadhead?

Fletching?

FOC?

KE?

FPS? (Bow setup. Draw weight & length)

What has worked for you in the past or what are you going to run?

Arrow? Gold Tip hunter XT. Very straight. 27 1/2"
Weight? about 350 I think. (at min.)
Broadhead? 100gr Sick Trick.
Fletching? Blazers.
FOC? on spec.
KE? Dont care.
FPS? (Bow setup. Draw weight & length) 70lb Vectrix 28" 300 fps

I am at min specs on arrow weight and prefer that for elk. I have not had any penetration issues, but always shooting for the lungs.

This will be my third archery elk tag. Not too many changes.

Bear Truth 2 @ 60lbs, 28 inch draw length

Easton FMJ 400 with Blazer vanes, total weight 448 grains

125 grain Magnus Stinger broadheads

FOC right around 13%

I don't concern myself with FPS. My arrows hit hard!

Carbon Express Mayhem Hunters: going to change to Easton Axis for a 300 spine rather than 340

Somewhere around 450 grains

100 grain Slick Trick Magnums

Blazer Vanes

About 15%

Momentum is more important but I don't know either KE or Momentum for my set up

285-290fps; Hoyt Charger 70# draw weight and 30" draw length

I run a 350 spine bloodsport ONYX arrow which is 10.2 grains per inch.

I run blazer vanes with a 125 grain gravedigger cut on contact with ROC outsert.

Total arrow weight is right at 500grains with 16-17% FOC.

Anyone shooting vap arrows? I am also setting up for elk for the first time in almost 10 years.

Interested to see what others are saying here.

Not new to archery at all. My arrows are setup for deer hunting. Since this is my second elk hunt and what I've seen happen with lighter arrow setups I'm looking to up my arrow weight for better penetration.

These are the 2 I am testing for deer and javelina. Hit like a sledgehammer and tested them vs steel, plywood, and had lots of arrows stuck to the fletchings on a new morrell outdoor range archery target and a couple pass thoughs through a half worn out block classic 22.

Arrow? Easton Axis 300, Gold Tip Kinetic Kaos 300

Weight? 500 gr, 490 gr

Broadhead? Muzzy trocar, magnus black hornet, and nap killzone

Fletching? 4 fletch 3" super spine (point of impact at 30 yards within a couple inches with a missing fletching or 2), plan to keep the 4 fletch setup but might switch back to long low profile bohning fletchings since they do the best in catclaw and oak brush. Used to use 3 fletch blazers but are too loud above 260 fps

FOC? Above 10% always no matter the setup

KE? Maybe around 92 but momentum is way more important (my 400 gr arrows at 320 fps only go into the target half as much as the 500 gr)

FPS? (Bow setup. Draw weight & length) 287 fps, hoyt carbon defiant turbo 73 lbs 28"

Tune, tune, and tune some more. Perfect arrow flight kills far better. Can get decent accuracy when only halfway done bareshaft tuning. The last fraction of tuning I always start having the arrows dig into the target further.

Pick any decent arrow, with a decent broadhead, and stick it into the center of his lungs from about 15 yards away.

Easton axis 400 spine with 100 gr. G5 Montec, 28" 70 pounds draw weight. I believe it chronos at 280 fps. I've shot two elk, one at 25 and the other just over 30 with both being full pass through double lung shots.
