West fork is still closed and GF killed the fish in it last year to get rid of the Brown trout and i dont think they stocked it last year due to a hatchery sickness. Pine Donkey Report post Posted April 9, 2017 Big lake has paved access and hookups but you will be right on top of others and may even need reservations if it's a busy weekend. The road from Alpine is now paved; what a shame. At least all the wolf lovers can get easily drive their prius' in there now. Hundreds of nice spots on the unit as it is pretty flat. If you are within a couple miles of the Big Lake area it gets a little crowded. Up near Crosby crossing or Pat knoll will get you away from others and put you in the middle of the unit. Most importantly, park away from dead trees. They have rotted for enough years that they are beginning to fall in even moderate wind. Also carry a chain saw in your truck while scouting. Alpinebullwinkle Report post Posted April 10, 2017 The aha I have noticed since the 2011 Wallow Fire is the forest is still losing perfectly healthy green trees blowing over under wet conditions. I guess the explanation is with most of the surrounding trees burned there is less resistance against the wind or greater gusts that are still taking out perfectly healthy trees. We went up to Escudilla middle of March to see how far up we could go......huge tree across the road right close to the top/snowline......4 wheeler tracks bailing off the side to go around the uprooted tree base!!!
