wild/feral pigs in AZ where can i find some on public land?

Recommended Posts

Welcome to the site plee911. This is one subject that has been pounded around here for a while now. If there is such a spot I doubt anyone shares it with you. Don't mean to be the one to break the bad news but it is what it is. I hope you enjoy coueswhitetail.com as much as the rest of us. Good luck finding your pig spot. :)

i talked to the wildlife manager for 13b about it a few years ago and he gave me some areas to hunt but for me is a long drive for pigs, but if you call the manager there i'm sure he will give you some info, they want them out of there.

I've seen their tracks down in the northern end of the Pakoon part of the Grand Canyon NM in 13B. That surprised me a little considering how hot and dry that place is. I know they are mostly concentrated on Black Rock Mountain and vicinity in 13B, but there are a few along the Virgin River corridor. There are some folks up there that have them pegged and go after them religiously, though.

I am waiting for the Packet for 13B and also have a few other places that I am looking into.

The Topok pigs are in the refuge so I know I cant hunt them they killed or trapped 170 of them in the past couple months in the refuge. I was hoping somebody Knew if they come out on the northern end of the refuge. Looks like a lot of AG fields and I know how pigs love to rip them up.

For those who posted info to help thank you very very much your responses were a huge help.

Due to the snarky responses from some of the members I feel the need to clear a few things up.

I wasn't expecting or asking anyone to tell me drive down forest road such and such or go to water hole near here or there. I was just looking for a little more information as far as what units to look in.

Me and my friends are not afraid to put in the work to scout a unit and we are not looking for a hog behind every tree or trophy hogs as some member posts suggested. We know these animals will be a tough hunt and that we are going to have to work to get them. They are not going to be a weekend warrior kind of hunt. I have been researching them for months and we plan to spend 2 weeks in the field at a time. We are all looking to fill freezers we are not interested in trophy anything thats why I said feral domestics were fine as well. To Those who posted those type of comments your self important ignorance is showing.

Just didn't want to waste my time scouting units where there are none and thought fellow hunters might understand and at least point me in the right direction.

Yes I said snarky it was a more appropriate choice than what I initially wanted to say but I am trying to be polite. Yes I will acknowledge that I have not posted much as I am a fairly new member to this forum but not new to the site. I had been looking at the site for a long time and decided to stop being a lurker and join.

As far as the OTC elk that is already in the works as well. Not much choice since no one in my group was drawn this year.

The feral pigs were just something to add to it so that the elk are not the only egg in the basket.

We have also put in for deer and turkey on this draw.

Like I said I am researching options the pigs looked like a good option as they are invasive, destructive and unregulated.

I am also waiting to hear back from a family member in Farmington New Mexico about a possible hog hunt in his area. If he is able to give me good info then I will let everyone know what areas are recommended and any contact info I am able to get to help others that might be interested in going to New Mexico for hogs.

Also I just received confirmation from Tim at AZGF that the population in 13b is still viable and stable though small and is still mainly isolated to the black rock and mud mountain area. The update is nice since the info on the web site has not changed since 2012. He said that he doesn't get reports very often from weekend hunters having luck only people that have spent about a week at a time out in the field and he also said that hunters using dogs trained to track pigs have been reasonably successful. Not planning to use dogs but don't mind spending the time in the field.

I'm guessing your talking about the Alamo lake area. Was reviewing the maps and it does look very promising at the northern end. I greatly appreciate the info as it gives a possibility for both elk and Feral pigs. Maybe able to get out that way in a couple of weeks to do some scouting. Getting too hot to plan on taking an animal (I refuse to take an animal if its going to spoil before I can get it packed out) but if scouting is successful will have a good idea where to look when it cools down a bit.
