Memorable Shots

Recommended Posts

Didn't want to get sideways with the other threads so I thought I would start this one. Don't remember the exact year but right around 2000, I was hunting with a .280 Rem and for some reason I put a old Weaver K4 scope on it, my buddy bird dogged 4 bucks right to me, I heard them long before I saw them, they came over a small hill, and was standing there looking behind them where by buddy was coming from, they were blowing and snorting, pounding their feet, I picked what looked like the biggest one and got him in my cross hairs, and let it go, man that deer went down like someone jerked the carpet from underneath him, using a 150gr Nosler BT, sighted in at 200 yards, I guessed him to be around 200, the bullet went right where my cross hairs was. At the sound of the shot 2 of the 3 other bucks took off, but one hung around about 100 yards off, my buddy later took him. I'll never forget the way that deer went down.

I killed an archery bull elk at 5 yards and rifle mule deer at 5 feet running full tilt with a hip shot with a 30-06.

I've also killed quite a few at ranges I don't want to discuss here.

I called a Bear into 13 yards and killed it with my bow. It was an amazing experience......

Seeing my first lion ever at about 25 feet, raising my late grandfathers 270 and rolling his asss.

Also, my first "long" shot, absolutely smoking a buck at 572 with my 257 wby the first year i had it.

Probably the best shot for me was the mountain lion I called in one May day using my diaphragm elk call and trying to imitate a momma elk having birthing problems. The lion passed me at about 35 yards. When she was behind a big ponderosa pine I pulled out my 44 magnum pistol and aimed directly at her midsection since I really can't hit the broad side of a canyon with my pistol. Shocked me significantly when she rolled over with the bullet penetrating her neck. I only missed my target by about two feet but the shot was still lethal. I approached her with a big stick in my hand and when I poked her to check for remaining life she jumped up and gave me one last act of defiance swipe before she expired. Almost had a heart attack. One neat thing about the mount I did with her is she had lots of porcupine quills in her mouth which I left as I found her. She now looks much better on my wall than when I shot her.

My most memorable shot is my worst one. A 32 yard chip shot at a little spike buck that was staring right at me. That deer did a complete 180 turn in the time it took my 280 fps arrow to cover 32 yards and turned an otherwise well executed shot into the crappiest day I ever had hunting. Only deer I ever lost. To top it off I'd completely missed a nice 6 point two hours earlier that was also alert and also had jumped the string.

A hard lesson on shot selection but it's one I remember every time there's a deer in front of me.

Another one that I will always remember, if you look up dink in the dictionary(or Google it for the younger guys), this deers picture would be there, anyway he was facing me at about 150, I hit him in the right side with a .270 130gr Nosler Partition, when I got about 15 feet from him the smell was terrible, that Partition went right through him tearing up entrals along the way, normally I wash the insides out real good after I get the hide off back in camp, but this one got it on the spot.

Taking a shot at a buck quartering away from me after missing a 75yrd running shot and dumped him at 498yrds with my .270. The bullet went in behind the left shoulder and ended up in his neck about 4' from his lower jaw bone on the right.

hunting on the Wind River Rez in Wy by Burris, my Dad was enrolled Shoshone, I was 6, we kicked up a big buck and he took off, my Dad says "I know where he went, get in the Jeep". We drove around and came up on what we called The Big Draw, belly crawled up to the edge and peeked around sagebrush, Dad says "there he is, roll over and rest your rifle on this sagebrush", so I rolled over butt first into a cactus and let out a holler, Dad pulled my pants down, picked a couple cactus needles then said "let's shoot that deer, these aren't going anywhere". So I settle down, aimed between the eyes and boom, down he went, hit him in the neck just below the chin with a .244rem. Then Dad got the rest of the needles out of my but and we went and took care of the deer. Thinking back it was a really good 4x, biggest I took for a lot of years afterwards. No idea what happened to the antlers, they were given away to someone, those days we cared about the meat not the horns.

Now that I think about it, my favorite was my brother. First morning of his first deer hunt we get to I can't remember if it was 400 or 500 yd of a pair of little bucks. The bigger of the two stands up and my brother shoots right over his back, without missing a beat he's got another round chambered. I tell him to hold six inches lower, he drops the hammer and absolutely demolishes that buck!

Aside from my own first deer (nothing terribly memorable about the shot itself other than being a 20ga slug) I'd have to say my first coues experience which was my buddy's first deer. After watching a bedded buck for what seemed like an hour (probably more like 30 minutes) with my 2 buddies in their rifles ready to shoot, the buck gets up...one buddy misses then can't find the buck in the scope again. I'm yelling at them to shoot again and finally my other buddy shoots and drops the buck in his tracks. I had no idea who had shot until after it was all over. A memorable pack out in the dark too...not sure I'll ever pack one out without quartering it ever again.

I missed his shots, but I also got to help the same buddy that missed pack out a couple nice coues in later seasons...and he returned the favor on one of my mulie bucks. Good times in the field. Thanks for this thread triggering the memories.

My most memorable shot was not taken by me. It was Taylor taking her first bull elk. If you look close, you can see the bull down at the top of the pointed stick in front of her. 160 yards, through the timber, under a branch, over a stump, threading the needle and putting the bullet exactly where it needed to go from a kneeling position with my .300RUM, and the bull just rolled over stone dead.

Look at that tangled mess she shot through.

A shot I cannot duplicate again. I shoot a running poult turkey at 65 yards in the neck severing his head off. I did this with a PSE Thunderbolt express and a walmart arrow. I even hit exactly where I was aiming. best two pound turkey ever.
