ATTENTION IF YOU TRAVEL TO SONORA

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, just giving you a heads up. On January 8, 2017, a new law went into effect for travelers going into Sonora Mexico outside the "Free Zone". If you drive a 1/2 ton truck and/or if you stay inside the Free Zone this law does not affect you.

If in the vehicle registration states that the weight (GVW) of the truck is 7,750 lbs or more, you wont be able to get a truck permit therefore you wont be able to take your truck to your scouting or hunting trip. Pick up trucks with dual tires or dually wont be able to cross into Mexico.

If you travel outside the Free Zone and have a 3/4 ton truck (F-250 or Chevy or Dodge 2500) make sure in the vehicle registration the weight is blank or less than 7,750 lbs...if it's not blank or less than that, my suggestion is that you go to your MVD and get a new registration showing no GVW on it before you go into your scouting/hunting trip.

To me, is a law that doesn't make sense but any way....I just hope with this info I can save you a headache or a days worth of your time if you show up there and are not able to get a truck permit.

To all going to hunt in Sonora Mexico good luck and have a excellent hunting trip and season.

Ernesto C.

Good ol' Mexico. Where they change laws for no reason, at the drop of a hat, and half the crossings don't get the memo anyways.

Good info to know Ernesto, thanks for posting. That could wreck a trip real fst.

Hey Ernesto-

Thanks for answering my question yesterday on Facebook. I have another for you or anyone else. How far in advance do you need to start send permit stuff in (rifle, truck, etc.)

Thanks

Thanks Sniper. Hey rossislider for your truck you can get your permits right there at the border or you can order them online..once I get off work I will send you the link and tell you how to do it and what will you need.

For your rifle...the sooner you give your Outfitter the info the better but you can get your gun permit in two or three weeks but don't push it you know. I usually get all my gun permits done by September don't like to wait till the end.

Ernesto thanks so much for trying to help us understand some of the new regulations for taking vehicles into Mexico.

We should use this post to help everyone that is going down to Mexico this season. Please feel free to add comments if you have concrete info.

1. Vehicles have to be in your personal name and in the drivers name.

2. If taking a trailer the trailer has to be in the drivers personal name.

3. If taking a quad or utv they also have to be in the driver of the towing vehicles personal name.

4. You cannot mix and match different owners on the trailer, quads or UTV's. Everything has to be in the drivers name.

5. I have been told no flatbed trucks and no dual tire trucks (no confirmation on this yet)

6. I have been told no commercial vehicles. (i highly recommend personal name vehicles)

7. You must have the title or the registration that is valid and up to date.

8. I have been told by some that if the vehicle is over 7716 (which is any 3/4 or larger vehicle) is will not be eligible to pass into Mexico. Conversely, I have been told that it is ok to be over 7716 but you just have to pay more. (if someone gets concrete info on this please keep us informed)

9. I always make copies of my passport, drivers license, title, registration etc. Multiple copies.

10. I have seen it done where the truck is in a company name or LLC. I have seen it work where on company letterhead it states that Joe Blow has the authority and permission to take the xxxx vehicle with license plate XXX into mexico for these dates. (I'm not sure if that is going to work anymore)

11. I dont think it would hurt to have a letter that is notarized that says that the vehicle is for personal use only and is not a commercial vehicle. (I think they are trying to crack down on commercial vehicles entering into Mexico)

As I get more info I will try to share it on here. Remember No Capes with ticks can cross into the US. Pick them clean so that we make all hunters look good.
