Trying to help a couple of newbies.

Recommended Posts

I have a couple of newbie hunters that asked for my help. I told them where to put in for so I could help them in a unit I know. Some how they put in for some crazy units. I have one that pulled a unit 21 coues tag and a one that pulled a 36b coues tag. I have never hunted these unit. With out giving away any sweet spot is any one willing to point me in the the right direction to start scouting.

Thank you.

Arizona Fish and Game. When taking a new hunter out (older ones) I make them do their own home work, location, maps, G & F, camp sites etc. I will give them advice, but If all they want is a guide they wont learn anything.

The azgfd "where to hunt" section is a great starting point.

With more savvy newbies I like to go over maps with them and point out what kind of stuff I look for and why I glass some areas, and then give them a map of their unit or a large area of my favorite unit and then let them try to figure out where they want to hunt.

If they can do that, and they can glass than they will be a better hunter than 90% of the average Joe's out there.

In either of those units, finding a little buck won't be all that hard and it's super rewarding for them to be a part of the process.

Agree with the posts above, also teach your buddies the custom google search of "site:coueswhitetail.com _____" where ___ = 36B, with/or anything else their hearts desire.

make sure they have tripods and good glass teach them in any unit how to find and identify what they are hunting and they will do just fine. I hunted 21 last year and found deer everywhere and hunted 36b a few years back on a javelina hunt and saw more deer than anything.

Nice. Never used search logic like this but it's great! I can use this for work too since the search function on several of our intranet sites isn't great.

Man, I couldn't function without it, especially at work.

Another beneficial one for hunters, if one is looking for a specific file type for instance, i.e. .KMZ

"filetype:KMZ ___________"

time to learn ---- you go out and scout if you don't have the time to scout - you go out and hunt

drive the roads and learn where to hunt -- you pound the deserts you learn where not to hunt

Over half of my scouting trips were at the same time of my hunts :) Just go and have fun

For 36B anywhere south of ruby road is good. If they are looking to tag out then it will be a good chance for them to glass and pick their deer. If they are looking for a trophy then they will have a lot of glassing and waiting to do. There are some very nice bucks in the area but there will also be a lot of other hunters looking for the same bucks. A friend got a decent 3X3 last year in this unit 400 yards from another group of hunters. They glassed it first so we gave them first crack but they passed cause it wasn't what they wanted. My group got drawn for 36B this year as well. There will be 9 tag holders in our camp so we are not going to be super picky. You also have to remember that that area is right on the border and there is the issue with illegals in the area. Good rule of thumb don't pass on day 1 what you would shoot on day 5.
