New Mexico Unit 27

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, looking for some direction in unit 27. I drew an early (Oct 28-Nov4) muzzy tag for coues and am not really sure where to start. I was just with a friend right across the border in the Chiricahua mountains which turned out to be a really tough hunt in some thick crap. I hunted coues for the first time last year when I got an archery tag from a friend that was hurt and couldn't hunt and only saw does. I am glassing really hard but am struggling to connect. So, in short just looking for some advice and direction. I don't want to take anyone's secret spots. Also, is the illegal activity still a problem in the area? Plan on hunting by myself and I know we saw quite a bit of activity across the border.

So, your friend "gave you" his archery deer tag in AZ because he was hurt?

Man that made sense in my head when I was typing it haha. Yea a buddy of mine broke his wrist last year and was able to transfer his tag to me with doctors note by calling the Santa fe office and doing some paperwork. Long story short I came up empty. Just went on an OCT archery hunt with a friend to help him glass in the Chiricahuas and the deer were around 6k, moving quite a bit but it was so thick you couldn't glass so that was a learning point.

I'm just getting nervous about my hunt coming up in 27. #1 from my past experiences I'm not sure I'm scouting right. #2 it's 4.5 hours from me so I won't get boots on the ground until the week of. So figured I would see if anyone on here might be willing to get me started in the right direction. Between now and then I plan on reading Duwane Adams book how to hunt coues deer and educating myself a little more.
