Honda Vs. Champion Generator

When sitting around camp and charging a batt you want QUIET. I bought a yamaha but wished I had a honda.

As far a quieting down a generator goes, as a boy scout I had a scout leader with a very loud generator (this was about 25 years ago). He would bring it from time to time on outings. Along with it he would bring some of the pink wall insulation and wrap around the side of the generator facing camp and a piece for above. The back side would be open so the generator could breath and get air. It made a pretty big difference in the amount of noise we heard in camp.

I have champions and they're good imo. I would buy them again. For the prices I don't think they can be beat.

I have a Champion with remote start, by far the best thing ever!! The remote start is so nice, not sure how reliable it will be in the years to come, but so far I have been very happy.

 

For long term investment, one cannot argue with Honda.

 

If I had to choose between the two and remote start wasn't part of the decision, I would go with the Honda.

 

But I got the Champion 3100 with remote start for less than the Honda 2000- the Honda would not power the A/C (I used a friend's) and it struggled with the microwave. The Champion powers both with no problem (but not both at the same time). Just didn't want to spend the $$ for the Honda 3000

I have the 3100 W champion inverter gen for my RV. Works great, sips fuel, quiet, and will run the 15,000 btu AC unit in the camper. For $699, you can't beat it. Oh and Champion customer service is second to none. When I was refilling the fuel tank I lost the little filter screen that fits inside the top of the tank. I called customer service and asked for the part number and told them i'd like to order a new one. The guy I talked to said "don't worry about it, I'll send one out free". 3 days later i received it in the mail.

I think some people are comparing a Honda Inverter to a Champion open frame generator. The Champion Inverter gens are VERY comparable in fuel economy and noise level to the Hondas at more than half the price. No doubt Hondas are the bees knees, but Champion's are not junk.

I have a Champion 2000 the little square one and it is a great generator and very quite. Go look at the RV sites and YouTube videos for full details and sound tests. The Champion is plenty quiet, we run it on a boat for bowfishing all night long. Do a little research and you will read that the basic design is a Honda copy same thing with the new ones Harbor Freight offers and a lot of the others. You can buy a parallel kit and run 2 and have options with the smaller gennys.

 

All that being said id you have the money a Honda is the best you can buy and they hold their value. Either way buy a cord long enough that you don't have to hear it much at all no matter the brand.

Thanks, for everyone's opinions. I settled on a Honda EU2000i. I'll be putting it to the test come Oct. 6th on our family squirrel hunting trip..

I'm in the market for a generator and I've been looking at both the Honda EU2000 and the Champion 2000 generators. I can't make up my mind. Any and all advise would be appreciated. main use will be for a pop up.

I currently own both. I bought a champion 1500 back in 2010 for like $179 on sale somewhere. I bet I have run that genny at least 500-750 hours and it has given me no problems in 7 years. It is great on fuel and runs like a champ. I had a 3000 champion that I ran for years and years.......until it got stolen. The big difference was the power out put and fuel consumption. The 3000 used much more fuel but someone could run the AC if they wanted. The 1500 used very, very little fuel and would run the furnace and charge batteries. I liked only having to bring one 5 gallon can of gas per trip. That was very nice.

 

The Honda 2000 is awesome. They are quieter and super reliable. There are cool gas cans and toys you can hook up to them all over the internet. Pretty cool. They will also run the furnace and charge batteries.......might even run a microwave depending on the micorwave. But you can run two (2000 + 2000 = 4000) of them together and life is really good. Then you can run the AC and live large. But the price is more than 2k for the two generators so you can run tandem.

 

Here is my take away. If you only want the best and spending $2,000.00 is not a big deal then get the Honda's. If you think 2K is a bunch of money then get an extension cord. Extension cords are cheaper than Honda's. All are awesome generators.

 

One last thing. Run the generators dry after use and only use premium gas for best results.

I ran my honda with stabil and ran it 10min every other month and it always started on the first or second pull. I even bought an extra spark plug but it never needed it. Every time I checked the original was perfect.

 

Also it fit perfectly in a medium sized action packer. The ridge in the lid kept it upright.

I think you will like your Honda. I have the eu2000 and it has run flawless. I was even a bit dumb on my wifes elk hunt and wasn't paying attention and poured diesel in it. It was smoking and all kinds of things and quit running. I emptied it out and drained the engine and after about an hour of flushing and pull starting, it started running again. I ran it that night and all the way home in the truck and it purred the whole time. I was really lucky!

I have only seen 2 Hondas have issues. Both were abused and not maintained. 1 was one of my construction crews didn't realize they knocked it over while running. It ran aon time on its side I am sure, but is messed up a bearing. We had it serviced and it still ran afterwards but you could hear something wasn't right, but it kept running.

 

The other was a duner. We tried to take it elk hunting last year. We got there and it wouldn't start, or if it did would die almost immediately. We pulled the dipstick and the oil was low and BLACK. We dumped it out and you could see sand in the oil, and not just a little sand, alot. We flushed it with new oil twice, and it ran for awhile and stopped. I am told the owner had it serviced when we got back and it is running fine now...

Last weekend was our 4th trip with the new eu2000. I bought it from a private seller new in unopen box. I have ran about 3 or 4 gallons through it is all. It won't run at all. It starts after a few pulls, then dies in a minute or 2. I checked oil and air filter all looks good. Just my luck.

I've seen that happen twice. Once was the extension cord connection to the trialer got wet and was shorting out the genny. When everything was dry it went away. The second time it was because the oil was a bit low and the genny kicked off because of the low oil. I would do an oil change and make sure the genny has plenty of oil.
