Unit 8 Knowledge

Recommended Posts

I have a few questions about the unit and I'm looking for any Unit 8 guys willing to offer up some info? My dad drew a late rifle bull tag. Its his first bull tag and I'd really like to see him shoot one. PM's probably best.

Thanks

The best thing to do in 8 is get boots on the ground and time behind the binos.

They can be all over the place in 8. I have been on good hunts there, and hunts where you would swear you were hunting ghosts.

As stated above elk pretty much thru out the unit. Late rifle has alot of tags so animals will be pressured. My dad also has the late rifle this year.

If I were you I would start looking in the transition areas where the pines turn to juniper. Get high and glass. Get to the places where roads aren't and see what you can find.

Don't underestimate the potential of the lower flats in the southern part of the unit. Lotsa nice bulls down low. It's really dry right now, so finding water is a good start.

Look for the nastiest country you don't want to go into.. and go.

8 is pretty easy to locate bulls late but killing them is another question. Look for nasty stuff, the further from a road the better and dive on in. Sycamore canyon is usually great but you should bring a knife and a fork and a few guys to just eat em where he falls! Most places in the canyon to pack one out would best be described as hellish! The easier accessable canyons are usually pretty crowded. But you never know who has the tags and where the bulls are using so scouting is a must. Good luck
