My Boys First Coues Bucks 2 for 2...

Recommended Posts

I just want to say I have been waiting 13 years for this day to finally happen. When my first son was born I told my wife I can't wait to take him hunting. At the age of 2 I took him coyote hunting with me for the first time. At the age of 8 he came on his first Coues hunt and watched his uncle shoot a nice Buck. I have put him in for the last 3 years for a JR. hunt and he has never been lucky to get drawn. So this year both of my boys got lucky and drew a November tag. So on Friday at 2:30am we left Phoenix to go on their hunt. We got to our spot at 6:15am just a little after the sun was starting to rise. We got set up and started glassing right away my younger son started to glass up some Doe's and shortly after my older son that was glassing an opposite ridge glassed up a few Doe's as well. Then we here 5 shots coming from the North of us. I told my boys keep and eye around that ridge because that mountain was going to come alive. Sure enough Doe after Doe were running towards our direction from the opposite side of the mountain we were glassing. I told them to keep glassing in that direction and I was going to glass another ridge where I thought I would see a good buck. Sure enough not three minutes later I spotted a nice buck a 1,008 yards away. I told my boys I had a buck and we were going to wait until it bedded down before we made our move. After 15 minutes of watching he beds down on the top of the mountain ridge behind a bolder. I told my younger son that he was my eyes and to watch this buck. I gave him two jobs, never take your eye off the buck and to tell me if he gets up. I grab my older son and make our way to a knob that was 600 yards from us and 400 yards from the deer. We made the hike that took an hour and half to get to. In the process of getting there my oldest son fell about 15 times bruised his knee and was bleeding from both hands. I had managed to slip once sprained my ankle and bruised my elbow with the fall. My son never made a peep he got up every time and continued with the stalk even though he was in pain. We finally made it to the tree that we were heading for and my younger son says dad the buck just stood up and is walking to the left. My first reaction was crap we need to hurry this up. I got the rifle set up with the Phoenix Shooting Bags in place. I get my 15's on the deer to see where he was at. My son gets behind the gun and tells me he see's the deer. He asks me how far is the shot? I tell him 410 yards so he dials in the scope for 410 yards, He waits patiently for the buck to turn broadside and Boom I see the deer tumbling down the mountain into tree. I just couldn't believe it. My son just harvested his first Coues Buck. My son that was watching from a distance gets on the Radio and is in complete joy saying HE GOT HIM... HE GOT HIM... As my son turns to look at me I can see the look I have been waiting to see for 13 years. The glow in his eye that he just harvested his first Buck was priceless. ( I am going skip a big part of the story on how I went to retrieve the deer but like I said I was alone with my two boys that morning and he shot the deer cross canyon. I was so lucky enough to run into the most amazing family that helped me recover this buck for my son. The two boys stayed on top of the mountain and guided us to the buck and my new friend ALEX came and helped me get him off the mountain.)

The next day it was my younger son turn to harvest a buck. This time I had my cousin Joe and his nephews ages 9 come and spend the day with us. We ended up shooting the second buck around 5:45pm on Saturday. He made a great shot at 378 yards. One shot one kill as well. He was so excited to get his first buck. This little guy is a true marksman. He has been shooting since he was 2 years old. He has shot many different calibers from .308, 6.5 creedmore and the big 300 RUM. This kid has no fear. I may have posted a video of him shooting at 5 years old a 7MM-08 vs a .243. He chose a .243 after the test and thats what he killed his first buck with. I am so proud of both my sons. I will never forget this trip.

I just want to thank the family that I met while hunting with my boys. As we went to go retrieve the deer from the canyon they kept stopping by making sure my boys were ok. I was blessed by God to have met them. I don't think I could have made if off the mountain with the deer if it wasn't for them.
