17B Tips?

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I normally hunt 20A for Javalina, but I missed this years draw because of a family emergency. I went down to G&F today and picked up a couple left over tags in 17B which I have never hunted before. Is anyone willing to share some insight into the unit? Where to access the unit and camp, general hunt info, etc.

I don't need any specifics unless you are willing to share them, but just some guidance and ideas. I have been thinking about accessing the unit off the 93 via the Bagdad turnoff. I live in NW Phoenix, so I can hit Grand Ave and be up that way fairly quickly. Is it better hunting off the skull valley side?

Thank you.

Harley

I have never hunted it for Javelina but if it is anything like 16A I'd say get out and hike it before the hunts and you should be able to find them.

It is going to be a little while before I get notes, but when I do I will check in with you.

There are tons of pigs in this unit. Access anywhere from hillside to Baghdad and along the camp wood road. You can get to a bunch of country just north of skull valley. Find typical Javi habitat and you should do fine. There are tons of pigs in the juniper country but you have to work too hard to find em but the herds tend to be big due to no hunting pressure.

I finally was able to get a few boots on the ground this weekend in 17b near Bagdad. My next tip request is for some decent camp spots. Camping seemed much more spars then I was expecting. I am planNing on hunt near Bagdad for the rifle hunt in a couple weeks.

We did not. We only had Saturday to hunt/scout on this go around due to a work issue with my buddy. We spent most of our time trying to figure out the area. We glassed for a few hours in what appears to be good country but didn't find any. We spent a little time teaching my 5 year more about gun safety and helping him get some target practice.
