New Mexico Audad 29&30

Recommended Posts

On the first of February, I will be heading over to New Mexico's to hunt Audad in Unit 29 & 30. Having never seen an Audad and I've never set foot in the area, we are going in completely blind. Initially our plans are to hunt the Guadalupe mountains, but I have concerns that we will have a lots of competition. Our other thoughts are to check out the "flatter" less obvious country of unit 29, but I'm not sure how widespread the sheep are distributed.

If you have hunted this area before, is it possible to find sheep anywhere in these two units or should we stick to the more notable mt ranges?

I have hunted those units several times, Competition was very low.If you are looking for a good ram, Get away from the roads and hike and glass.Audads blend in and can be hard to see. Be prepared to have days without seeing a sheep. Guadalupe's is a good place to look.

You are in for a great hunt, don't give up, they are there.

I spend a lot of time in 29. The large mass of flat land in the middle doesn't hold sheep. Anything essentially around the edges where the terrain isn't flat can hold sheep. Cover ground and glass, you'll find them. Since javelina season opened I've found it easier to find sheep then javelina, since I have seen exactly zero pigs.

How long are you and Emery going for?

We are going over for the first 6 days, will probably go again later in the season.

Good luck, how long is the season?

My buddy and I were only able to hunt the first five days of the season, and thanks to Desert Bull giving us a starting point, we were able to find one to two groups of sheep per day. My buddy was able to shoot a ewe on the second to last day and I were as able to shoot a young ram on our last day. This hunt is a blast and I hope to go again soon.
