Bringing deer meat back into the US from Mexico

Amanda, you can bring meat in with no problem. It does not need to be frozen.

I don’t post much, but thought I’d chime in.

 

I went to US customs, at the Nogales port of entry(Centro, not Mariposa) and talked to the three officers at the main desk, about two hours ago.

Here are a couple of their answers.

 

Yes, you can bring meat back to the US from Mexico.

No, it does not need to be frozen

It is considered part of your trophy, your tagged antlers are proof of origin in mexico.

 

Capes need to be chemically treated, Frozen solid, OR delivered to a USDA approved Taxidermist (immediately). You can get the proper form from your taxidermist (if they are USDA approved).

I asked all these questions about 3 ways to make sure everyone was clear.

 

Sorry for the long post, but here is the protocol they explained to me:

 

1. Enter at Centro Port (nogales)

2. Before crossing park, walk you weapons in to US customs for inspection.

3. Fill out “personal effects” form

4. Enter Mexico

5. Immediately stop at Mx. Customs, get checked

6. Proceed to Mx Military base on east side of town.

7. Check guns again

8. Leave nogales

9. Stop at 21km checkpoint to obtain travel visa.

10. Then you are free to go hunt!

 

I hope I didn’t miss anything.

They said you cannot enter at Mariposa with guns or exit at mariposa with deer. Not sure how true all this is, but it is straight from the officers mouths.

Also, make SURE your tag numbers match your hunting contract and that your gun permits serial numbers are the same.

My advise is call the customs guys that check the deer for ticks and ask them. then call fish and wildlife and ask them what they want to see.

 

I believe the State of arizona wants the skulls clean do to CWD and that mexico imports deer from CWD areas in the U.S.

 

The one Thing I learned is to speak with FWS directly on what they require.
