Alaska fishing

Recommended Posts

Im sure this question has been out there before but Ill put it out there on the interest of time. My son graduates from college, commissions in the Army and we have about a 3 week window in June before hes gone for training then who knows what.

I would like to take him up to Alaska for a 2-3 day trip to fish for halibut/salmon. I know there are a ton of guide options so I dont necessarily need to know who but Im open to suggestions. Im more interested in the how/where? Id like to leave on a Thursday, fish Friday through Sunday and come home Monday.

Where should we fly to and any suggestions where to stay?

Thanks in advance.

I have fished Alaska 27 times over the years. I would go to Sitka. They have two of the largest hatcheries in Alaska there. The timing is perfect for kings, some coho, halibut and lingcod. We always fished with Mike Arthur. I think his company is Sitka Fishing Charters. He works hard and has a big catamaran boat and great equipment. They will fish the ocean and the inside passage. Have fun.

If you want to keep it simple fly in Anchorage, car rental, head down to Seward about 3 hour drive. The drive is awesome!! Seward is a pretty town. Just pick an outfit to go. There are plenty of hotels and places to eat. Make sure you buy your clothing in Anchorage though.

Our boat only fit about 6 fishermen on it the way I wanted. We did head out to sea while rough and I almost puked!! Once fish on I was ok. But sitting there I had to watch the horizon the whole time. Once we switched over to salmon in the calm water I was good

Nice mess of Salmon but some of those halibuts look pretty small. How many can each person take per day? Looks like there were some rollers.

Depends on the fishermen. By law you have to take a certain size which isn't to small but not big either. (I don't remember the size in inches) Then you can keep fishing catch and release until you want the size you want. Most people usually ended just being happy with with they got. But you can catch and keep all the Cod you want. But its very tiresome. Your bait is 90 feet below the sea level and reeling up 5-20 pound fish gets old and your forearm about to explode!

The Kenai river is the most popular sport fishing river in the world. Homer is about an hour drive away and is also a good destination for halibut fishing.
