Wow. I didn't realize that the peaks hunt had shrunk to just the wilderness zone. Kind of confusing in the regs and the link to the website has the old peaks boundaries. Hope they clarify and send the hunters an updated map.

I don't have experiences with any other offices bit I will say that the flag one is pretty terrible as far as customer service. They used to be a lot worse and have seemed to be better as of late. My first year trapping I walked in to get cites tags for bobcats. I left my cats in the truck and went in to see how and what I needed to do. The woman, almost yelling at me, was very rude and said how she can't just give me cites tags and wasn't about to walk out side. I said I didn't expect her to, that I was just trying to be curtious before bring animal carcasses into their building. Ever since then I've been waiting for the day I get a lion or a bear so I can drag it into the lobby for its inspection.

So how is it bad customer service to send you to a web site that might answer your questions? How about looking at the web site and then sending an e-mail, that can be answered at their convenience, if you still have questions. I know right now in NM they are getting ready to do elk studies on cow/calf and bull/cow ratios and may not have the data that you are asking for yet.

Put yourself in their shoes. Maybe they do need some training at the front desk, but maybe you are the 50th person that day that has called for the same reason. My wife being a trial attorney gets calls at all times and all days from "clients" without regard to the fact she might be getting ready for a trial on a different case. Basically she has had to get a personal cell phone and turn her business phone off at 5 PM. I can understand why they won't give out numbers.

The website she sent wasnt valid it was somethng else, im In the hospitality business and customer service is number 1 and doesnt matter if is the first or the 100th person to call we always treat them like the first, maybe in New Mexico is different, like I said before there are ways to answer and if you treat people nice they go a long way.

Like I said is a new hunt and no word about it in their website otherwise I wouldnt have called.

A big difference, as I see it, in the hospitality business, the customer calling can take their business elsewhere if you don't answer the phone or are rude. Kiss the customer's butt is probably close to #1 in the job duties. Not the case when dealing with GnF.

Having said that, while I have never contacted the northern office before, everyone I have ever dealt with was very helpful and polite. Even when dealing with issues such as last years messed up draw which generated a LOT of phone calls. Even spent over an hour on the phone with one manager talking about lions in detail. To put it in perspective, if all the MVD employees traded places with GnF employees......... Just sayin.

agree 100% and also i have to say it is the first time that this happened to me of all the other times great experience from the other offices, mesa and pinetop are the only 2 i have contacted but seems the flagstaff office has not a very good reputation, and yes we are stock we can't our bussiness somewhere else.

I think when all the MVD people retire they go to volunteer as range masters at Ben Avery shooting range.

In the past when I called I left my name and number and in a few days or so got a call back but that was probably 10 years or more ago.

Internet scouters, call Wildlife Managers, get the latest equipment, etc, wont make you a hunter. Time in the field will, or hire a guide to do the work for you. Getting some to do the work and then proudly posing with your big trophy does not make you a hunter. Go play video games and shoot your trophy and brag to people without a clue what a great hunter you are. G&F is inundated with calls looking for free info. Their job is to manage wildlife not help wannabes and other @#$%. There is lots of information on this site if you just shut up and read carefully. Get out to the Deep Woods and look around.

PS Elk dont just hang around in one spot.

The OP has some very valid questions. The kachina peaks hunt now has new boundaries that are not well defined or explained. I think more than a few elk will get shot outside of the new bouundries this year because of this confusion. I would want to talk to someone who knows at the game and fish as well. Kind of bold calling someone a wannabe who drew a tag for probably the most physically demanding elk hunt in the state. Anyone who tags an elk in these new boundaries is no wannabe.

While I don't normally take the side of azgfd, I will this time. Ask yourself if you would want to take the calls? I wouldn't. heck I don't like it when someone calls me cause a mutual friend gave my number out looking for info... They are damned if they do damned if they don't. If they give info and it bombs then he is a sob and if he gives the same info to 10 guys and now it is a crowded spot.... Sob....

If you want secrets go find them yourself... The rest of the info can be found searching their website of forest service for road issues.

A good friend of mine is a WM and he isn't much of a fan of the phone calls and I don't blame him

I had to go to MVD, inside, take a number, but the 2 people I met were wonderful. Very friendly and easy going! G&Flakes at the range.... not so much.
