Unit 6 Muzz Anyone?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I am a lucky non-res who drew this tag, though I didn't think I would. I will learn as much about the unit as possible as I have time to scout and prefer to not hire a guide at this time.

I am planning to scout the roads/access at the end of the month...and again in Oct. for some good bulls.

Any suggestions welcome, I know its a big area and I cant hunt it all. just trying to narrow it down a bit so I ain't running all over.

trying to narrow it down to half or quarter of the unit, if thats an option...

Thanks and good luck in the deer/sheep draws

Hello,

It's probably going to be another good year! On the way back from elk hunting last year I was listening to the radio and one of the gentlemen that guides "wounded warriors" said in his opinion it was the best the elk herds looked in 20 years. I'm sure you'll hear about Clint's Well and Happy Jack. I don't think I am divulging precious intel, everyone probably has hunted elk and deer near there at one time or the other. That certainly is no secret. Actually the elk I got last year was only a few miles from there. Game and fish has some good info in their unit description about where to start scouting and they were right on last year. Last year I got a real thrill when a herd of 10-12 elk crossed only 10 yards in front of me at a dead run when another hunter spooked them. Anyway, my group has 6A muzzy bull from 9/16 to 9/22 this year. Last year I figured was going to be the last elk tag for me, but I lucked out again!

I have the late archery hunt that immediately follows your hunt. There are no secrets here, I am going to focus on water near the rim.

If I was you, Id go where I could set up and glass the junipers.

Good luck!

Elk that time of year are pretty evenly dispersed. I know a guy whose entire family applies for that hunt and unit and they seem to draw 1-3 tags a year. They tend to hunt the middle of unit but they have taken bulls from top to bottom east to west. Lots of elk but I would gladly take the elk population 20 years ago as opposed to today. Way more elk back then IMO. You should do well. Good Luck

My daughter has the same hunt, I haven't had a tag in 6a for quite a few years, so I will be relearning it this summer and fall for sure. Beaton, if you have some info on hunting in the lower parts of the unit you care to share, I would appreciate it.
