I know Bob is right, but I am still green when it comes to turkey hunting.

I guess, what I was aiming for was the question of, does it make much of a difference to paint them to look like Merriams or do the birds even notice the difference?

Don't think it matters. The head color and glass eyes seem to be the most important aspect.

I have used them but rarely. I set up at dark in the woods with high trees and wait until first light to call. If they answer you will get one. You need to sound like a hen hooker.
