San Diego Trip Tips

Recommended Posts

i never crewed a boat but i did sit some watches in the wheelhouse on charters. 30 years + experience off socal.

two simple rules. 1)try to get a fish count if times are tough 2)bust yur butt for the customers if the fish are biting

not 1 boat in 2018 has gotten close to going over the hump on tuna and the boats are losing money and not getting chartered.

crew are expected to leave their bunks and work the deck when things get real. including the 2nd skipper.

i have seen many a deckhand who didn't know right from wrong terminated on deck. and rare crew fistfights.......

deadheads are a different matter but under control for the most part off 'dego-la landings are a nightmare

enough bullshit. the yft count will start climbing after the full moon and y'all should get ready to wind some line and burn some gas.

ps sad but brad phillips sold the first string. can anyone tell me the new name and landing?

shouldnt the crew just be telling/teaching you how to catch fish though

I think the crew is typically willing to teach. I ask questions all of the time. most captains have a ton of knowledge and some deckhands are awesome and some are morons. BUT.......when it comes down to it. Fish need to hit the deck and there are times it is better for the crew to just hook and hand. Some guys go on one trip every 3 years and aren't going to get it figured out in a very short period of time. Fishing is tough right now and they just need to fill the boat.

A good stick will frequently be willing to share some info and teach too.
