Kaibab Archery

Recommended Posts

I unexpectedly drew a Kaibab archery tag in my first year applying in AZ. Unfortunately, I live 14 hours away and drew a once in a lifetime tag in my home state, so I won't be able to dedicate as much time as I would like on the Kaibab. After travel time, I will have one week to hunt. So far I have reached out to a biologist and a game warden. I'm looking for any info I can get as far as what to expect on the hunt, hunting tactics, suggestions for places to camp, etc. I typically spot and stalk but I plan on bringing a blind to be prepared to sit water if the conditions are right. If anyone is willing to share any spots to check out that's just a bonus. I don't mind walking to get away from people. Any info you can share is much appreciated! Feel free to PM me.

I e-mailed them, I'm still waiting to hear back. Please no smartass comments like the one above, I'm not expecting anyone to tell me exactly where to go. I just want to get a better idea of what to expect on the hunt. Things like is there cell service, do I need to bring an atv to get around on the roads without beating the heck out of my pickup, etc. I live in MT and have lived in WY and I would be happy to exchange info.

Please share with us all what they say, inquiring minds want to know.

Roads everywhere some are open and some are closed. Lots of people, probably going to get some rain. If not it will be really dry so hunt water.

The roads in Kaibab are generally very good for the most part, without beating up your truck at all. I can't think of anywhere that the roads would require a quad, although there may be a very few areas.

I was going to have a smart mouth comment but since I lived in Montana for 2 years Ill help you out. I never hunted there yet but Ive talked to many many hunters who have. They all say the same thing. Since you are spot and stalk hunter just google earth and pick an area you want to hunt. Get out and spot and stalk. There are lots of bucks in there. Every hunter says they chase them all the time. Doesn't mean they get shot opportunity and its not the well known BAB big boy bucks but its just like that. No secret! Just like Coues deer in Arizona there is no secret get away 10 ft from a road or 2 miles its the secret is glass and glass and you will find them. Where to camp I am unsure of never hunted there. Good luck

Focus on the Warm Fire (2006) burn area (and fringe areas near it)....the young aspen jungle is full of deer.....and a few NICE bucks.

I will be up there hunting for 12 days with our group of guys, roads are in great shape. last time i was there cell signal was pretty sparse, had to go to lookout tower by Jacob lake to call out, not sure it has changed since i was last up there a few years ago. There are 500 tags which seems like a lot but it will not be that bad. There are deer basically everywhere you look, the burn is a good area to focus and if it dries up water will be an effective tactic. I mostly get away from the road and spot and stalk or sit on trails and water, just depends on the conditions. If you have a week to hunt you should have a good chance at finding a good deer to stalk.

I have not hunted it for years but this much shouldnt have changed, during the archery hunt look up in the pines. Get a turkey tag so that when you get frustrated you can blast one of those instead of shooting a forky out of frustration.

There are lots of nice camping areas. Its beautiful there that time of year. If you get lucky you may even bump into a herd of elk.

Enjoy, thats a hunt I have always wanted to go back and do again.
