Namibia July 2018 ( a return to Africa)

Recommended Posts

Hello CWT

Been awhile since the last time I poked my nose in. Probably since my Spain/Russia trip last November.

Well, didnt draw anything anywhere... again. But I DID finally return to Africa after a long 8 year hiatus from the dark continent. Ive been mountain hunting as hard as my finances would allow the last 8 years and Africa just took a back seat.

I made Namibia the priority this trip as I have never been there before, and because it is the safest country in Africa, I decided to take my 10 year old daughter, my wife and my mother on this trip.

Ill spare the written details other than to say it was a fantastic trip. 10 days of hunting with some incredible trophies taken.. a few for me I had been waiting to hunt for many years. We hunted north central Namibia not too far from Etosha Nat Park. I was fortunate enough to have taken a monster sable bull and Roan bull as well as Hartmanns mountain zebra, Damara dikdik, steenbok, and 2 gemsbok oryx bulls.

My daughter was Annie Oakley this trip. 6 kills with 6 shots from her 243. Im pretty sure she has the bug as badly as her old man now! She took 4 springbok, an impala, and a blue wildebeest.

After the hunt, we spent an incredible week in Swakopmund on the coast as well as a few days in Soussusvlei and Deadvlei in the Namib Desert. National Geographic stuff 💯!! Beautiful place!

So here are a handful of pics to enjoy. It was great being back in Africa but now the mountains call again and Oct cant come quickly enough!

Good hunting to you all and congratulations to those with a sheep tag in your pocket!

Sossusvlei and Deadvlei.

You have to REALLY want to see these to go. 5 hours of dirt roads to get here. Stunning place though!! It is literally the middle of nowhere. Tallest dunes in the world and theyre a beautiful peach orange color.

Lots of PHs use Jack Russels as tracking dogs.

Thanks. The Roan was measured as the 2nd largest ever to come from Namibia. He truly is a monster bull.

Awesome man!! Glad you got your kid out there with you! So whos dog was that in the picture with you and your daughter lol

Yes, PH’s dog. My daughter loved her so she was in pretty much every photo we took. Her name was Wrinkles and she was a tracking whiz. Luckily her services were not needed by us!

Awesome trip!

cji,

I believe the pics of the dead treas is actually in Deadvlei, which is near Sosusvlei (where they are standing in front of the sign). It's famous for a time when it rained so much that the river flooded and formed these two salt pans (marsh). It eventually dried-out leaving these dead camel thorn trees. They're in the middle of the giant red sand dunes. The trees are famously photographed, and are believed to be 600-700 years-old. They aren't petrified, they just don't rot away because the area receives nearly zero annual rainfall, so it's just too dry for them to break down and deteriorate.

Yes sir, the pics with the trees is Deadvlei. Its probably one of the most photographed places on earth for dramatic nature pics. It was really incredible to see! The dune behind Deadvlei in the photos is called Big Daddy. Supposedly the tallest dune on earth.

Sossusvlei was very close by. Just on the other side of the canyon. It isnt as dramatic as Deadvlei with its standing dead acacia forest, but it has the most beautiful dunes. Also the 2nd tallest dune is there, of course named Big Mamma.

These areas are great to see but they are WAYYY out there. It is 5-6 hours of washboarded dirt roads just to get to the entrance of the National Park. Then its another hour drive to these areas plus an hour walk in from the parking. Theyre way back in there!

Id recommend Swakopmund for just all out fun. Tons of stuff to do there and dang near just as much sand!

I appreciate it, guys.
