    Christmas Coues

Ill start off saying thanks to this forum and the people on it I learned a lot about Coues and how to hunt them since I moved here. Sadly I will be leaving in May so this is my last deer in Az for a very long time (possibly forever). Now for the story....I went out the morning of the 21st and glassed this buck alone heading in to some junipers and tried to call him with no luck whatsoever. I tried to track him but he disappeared quickly so I paid close attention to where he was heading and marked it on my map. I came home and did a little research another nice ridge to get on and glass from. Christmas day the wife wanted to go see a movie I had no interest in so she was nice enough to go with a friend while I took off to my ridge to do some hunting. Once I got on top of the ridge around 3pm I saw 3 does moving around grazing, I kept my eye on them and sure enough that same buck popped out of the junipers. At this point he was around 400 yds away and I had very little chance of trying to put on a stalk so I pulled out my grunt call to see if I could get a reaction. A few seconds after I blew it this buck to off running at me. He ran a solid 200 yds to me before he slowed down. At this point i'm getting nervous knowing I wasn't in a position to take a shot. I shed most of my gear keeping my range finder, bow, and grunt and try to shimmy my way down the rocks to get in to a better position throwing some soft grunts in occasionally. I climbed down about 40 yds and got in position. It took this buck about 20 seconds to close the first 200 yds and another 3-5 minutes to close the last 200. He came in looking for a fight, sure enough he topped the saddle I had positioned myself on about 30 yds away from me standing in the perfect position for a shot. I blew one final soft grunt to stop him and took my shot. I heard the arrow thud and he took off so I knew I had hit something. After a few minutes I went to where he was and there was the bloody arrow and a blood trail. I climbed back up the ridge to grab my gear and and track him down. I followed the blood trail for about 50 yds and this is what I found......

    Spooked buck advice.

You are right Pine, I guess bounded wasn't exactly the best choice of words there he just didn't seem like he was in too big of a hurry to get out of the area. I didnt see any muleys out there, but Im hoping to get my first with a bow when the season opens back up.

    Spooked buck advice.

Im sure it has been seen and hunted before im not that naive (good luck finding a place never been hunted before), but there are definitely no signs of anyone being there at least recently.
  8. Im looking for some advice on a buck we spooked yesterday. While hunting and switching stands yesterday afternoon my wife and I spooked a buck (No idea exactly how big my best guess is 6-8 points) in a new area I scouted this year. She can only hunt tomorrow and next weekend due to work. The buck didn't seem too spooked (more of a bounding away than an all out spook and run) I was able to stop him for a few second with a quick snort but she couldn't get the shot. My question is should I return to that spot tomorrow or wait till next weekend or count it as a missed opportunity and try again next year and finish this year at another location. Both locations I haven't even seen signs of other hunters anywhere close. She was very upset she didn't get a shot on him as this is her first year with a tag. Any advice/input would be greatly appreciated.

    New to Coues hunting

A big thanks to all those who gave me advice for this season. I was able to fill my tags with my first coues buck this year, not the biggest deer out there but a decent sized 5 point that I glassed up around 2 PM. Thanks again to everyone for all the help and advice!!!

    34a

I was around that area on Friday and filled my tag with a decent 5 point, I watched 12 doe all walking towards on valley on the side of a ridge so I snuck around to glass and he was bedded down under a tree.

    New to Coues hunting

I bleed orange my grandfather graduated from there so I have been watching the football games since I can remember. I'm just hoping I can find a way to watch the games over here. The two things I look forward to most every year, deer season and football season (the best time of year). Hopefully this football season will turn out better than the last few years, and thanks to the fine folks on this board I have a feeling this deer season will be a lot better than last years as well. Go Big Orange!

    New to Coues hunting

Awesome advice guys, I already feel way more prepared than last years failed attempt at my first Coues!I cant wait for the season to get here and get back out in the woods (or i guess desert in this case).I will say hunting deer in AZ is a lot more challenging and I assume more rewarding than hunting back East.

    New to Coues hunting

Thanks for the in depth response Flatlander, That is definitely some great and very helpful information. Coues hunting is a lot more difficult than eastern whitetail and im excited to get out there and see what I can do. I just ordered a spotting scope that will be waiting at the house for when I get back.
  14. I recently moved here from Tennessee last year and am looking for a little help/guidance on Coues hunting. I am very familiar with the strategies of Eastern whitetail and somewhat familiar with strategies for Coues thanks to this forum. I hunted 34A last year (and will be again this year with the late NOV hunt) with no luck seeing bucks but saw a few doe hunting the Box Canyon area but found that to be very overcrowded with hunters. I have a few new areas picked out for this year but will only be able to do limited scouting due to currently deployed overseas till early-mid Nov. I am looking on any info/tips to make my hunt a little more successful such as what gear is recommended for AZ, simple strategies, what is the best way to pack a deer out (assuming I can get my first Coues kill this year). Back east its as simple as gutting and dragging it out to hang and debone but I know the temperature difference here changes things a lot. Any information or help is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!
