I have hunted in 3 times over the last 4 years. It is an interesting unit. Even if you had time to scout you could not. Non-members are not allowed into D unless they are hunting white tail and then you can only be in there 3 days before the hunt. If you have never been hunting in D I would recommend going with a guide, they will usually work you out a reasonable deal. I have had experience with a couple of different guides. I have hunted with Dewey Wesley. He is a class act, just depends on if he has availability. I have spoken to Hoss (on this forum) on the phone, he appears to be a class act as well and seems to be honest and doesn't hype it up like some. I have had a bad experience with one guide, Gabriel Jackson (turnbull guide service). Be careful of him, that's all I will say on that one. It is difficult to kill something over 100 inches in the unit, but it is possible. I have hunted typically the entire season all years, give or take a day or two. The southwest corner of the unit is popular and for good reasons, you'll probably want to spend a bit of time in that area. The unit is enormous and deer are found from one end to the other. They are not in every canyon though, but tend to be in small pockets. Knowing the unit pretty well, If you don't go with a guide, I would expect you'll have a pretty tough hunt and will probably not want to go back.

Don't like to bash people on the website, but hunted San Carlos with Gabe Jackson, would not recommend him. If you want the dirty details you can message me. But suffice it to say, paid for a guaranteed lion, hunted 14 days, never treed a lion, down payment for a coues deer hunt, never showed for the hunt and still haven't heard from him to finish the lion hunt. Learned the hard way on him.

Have some friends with Tags on this hunt, anyone ever been Lucky enough to hunt this unit, any ideas on what to expect. They don't need a guide, so they are trying to do it thereselves, but you can't get into the unit until 3 days before the hunt. Should they shoot the first 90 inch buck they see? T

If you are going to spend the money, you should really look at a night force. I have put the huskemaw, nikon, leopold, swarovski and nightforce all next to each other, the only thing close in the real world is the swarovski and they just don't have the options or the durability of the nightforce, just my .02$. T

It was a joke up there. The line moved at a snails pace, the locals had the first 10 spots in line and seemed to just hang around and hold up the line. Every once in a while another local would show up with a folder of information and just get in line up front. Slowly, several guys from the back would go up front and strike a deal ($150) and the local would write down the info and get a tag for them. We just waited it out until all the crap went down and then B, C early still had plenty of tags and D late. Felt sorry for the guys who paid $150 bucks to get november tags in B, when there were enough left. Only 1 A early tag was left though. We wanted A tags, but ended up taking the D east late tags. Never hunted D east on the san carlos, so it will be interesting.
