    .243 for elk?

I know it is not ideal, but a .243 can take one down. My 11 yr old got his first cow with a .243. We just went into the hunt knowing we would limit his shots to about 150 yards or less. Ended up shooting one from about 75 yards. Spine shot. Dropped instantly. I wanted my son to be comfortable shooting it which led to him being more accurate which is important. Just my 2 cents.

    Tags came in the mail

My boys got their tags a few days ago, but my 12aw tag has not arrived yet. The CC charge for my tag was about a week later than the charge for my boys tag, so maybe that is why is hasn't arrived yet!!

    Anybody cards still getting hit?

A new charge just showed up for me last night/early this morning. If correct, looks like its gonna be 12A-W late for me as that was the only hunt I put in for (had 14 bps).

Youth hunters killed it this year.

Just wanted to add to kd300wsm's post on the youth hunters. We were fortunate to meet up with KD the second day of the hunt - he showed us some new country and gave my son an opportunity at a buck (that he decided to pass on). Looking forward to possibly hunting with KD in the future, as I am sure I could learn a lot. Thanks again KD! Although we fell well short of KD's successes, both my boys were eventually able to take their 1st ever deer, with the youngest being happy to tag-out first. They are definitely hooked on Dec mule deer hunting! Already asking about next year, which is great!

    20c youth

It's been about 15 years since I hunted 20c, did OK east of Yarnell I think it was, but decided to put my 2 boys in separately for the Dec 16-31 hunt. Surprisingly, both drew the tag. I figured hunting with them at the end of December when they are off school and I am off work, would work out great. Sounds like it is a tough unit though. I've had good luck getting into big deer in December in other units when bow hunting, so hoping the bucks decide to show themselves. I know there will have been 1000+ hunters in there before us, but that's the same way with lots of other units too. Anyone else who wants to get together to scout or trade notes, please pm me. Probably scouting more in late Nov/early Dec as gonna be scouting for a Jr. cow hunt before then.
