Hey All, I was the lead editor for the 2020 edition of the Records of Arizona Big Game. This was the Golden Anniversary edition since it has been 50 years since the recordbook was established in 1970. This is the oldest running recordbook in the United States and this latest edition is a great one (if I do say so myself!). We decided to do full color and it's loaded with hunt stories, tributes to wildlife conservationists that we have lost since the last edition, several thought-provoking articles and a bunch of great photos of spectacular animals. How many of you know people over 65 years old that are still hunting? I was trying to think the other day about who the oldest hunter I know is. I believe for me that would be a guy in my neighbor's family named "Chub", he is 90 and he killed an elk this year. I was fortunate this year to help a 75 year old friend on a hunt in the Kaibab this year. I hope I can be that tough at 75! Here is his pic: I thought it would be nice to honor some of our eldest hunters with posting their photos here. So if you have pics of older hunters, post them here and tell us a little more about them. In mid-December Lark asked me to post these photos for him. (sorry for taking so long Lark!) Here is what he wrote about him: 80 year old Rusty "Papster" Lewellen took this bull yesterday north of Payson. He was aided by his son Steve, and and an assortment of grandsons and other derrilects and reprobates. This is one tough ol' WWII vet that deserves a little recognition.

Tony Mandile was a long-time contributor to this forum. He passed away yesterday morning from complications from COPD, Covid and an infection he got while at the hospital. His wife, Ellen, also got sick about the same time and spent time in the hospital, but is recovering at home. His family says he did not wish to hold a service, but I wanted to share with you all some more about his background. Tony went by the handle Outdoor Writer in this forum as well as other hunting forums. He made a living as a professional write for almost 40 years and he was a wealth of knowledge about the outdoors. I enjoyed my conversations with him and he will be missed. Tony and his wife attended some of our CWT campouts so many years ago. In addition to being a hunter, he was an outstanding photographer and he enjoyed cooking some excellent meals, which he often shared on Facebook. Many of you have enjoyed the book he co-wrote with Duwane Adams, "How to Hunt Coues Deer". He hunted and fished in 39 states and 10 Canadian provinces. He also hunted and fished in Africa, New Zealand and Mexico. Mandile began a part-time writing career in 1969 and has been a full-time freelance outdoor writer/photographer for 38 years. His 30-year active membership in the Outdoor Writers Association of America (OWAA) included three years on the board of directors. He also served on the board of the Western Outdoor Writers (WOW) and the Professional Outdoor Media Association (POMA), which he helped create in 2005. He was a contributing editor for ARIZONA HUNTER & ANGLER magazine for 10 years, and wrote seven years as the Arizona Editor for OUTDOOR LIFE magazine. Mandile wrote his book -- HOW TO HUNT COUES DEER -- with noted guide Duwane Adams in 2003, and the Arizona Game & Fish Commission selected him as "Outdoor Writer of the Year" for 2011. when you are logged into the forum, click on your name in upper right corner of forum to show the dropdown menu. Click on account settings and then look to the right hand side for "Notification Settings", click on that and click on "do not send me notifications". Hey Everyone! Please help me welcome HD Trophy Hunts as a new sponsor of CouesWhitetail.com! Mike Harris and his partners Daniel and Rodney Crook provide hunters with some great lion and bear hunts with dogs. Mike has been a forum member here for quite awhile and has been guiding since he was 18. He started HD Trophy Hunts 3 years ago and in that time they have had some great success! Last year they harvested 5 bears over 20 inches! Wow! Last year they harvested bears in nine different units, so they definitely know some great spots. Most of the lion hunts are done in Southern Arizona, but of course they will go wherever needed. They offer fully outfitted or just guided hunts, whichever the clients want. "Our camps usually consist of wall tents and or camp trailers depending on the location of the hunt. All meals are provided on fully outfitted hunts, we provide a “meal survey” for the hunter prior to the hunt, we realize not everyone likes to eat the same food, this seems to make the hunts go smoother. Preparation eliminates surprises." Mike said. When I asked what their success rate has been for clients, here is what Mike said, "We have a VERY high success rate for bear, we do not guarantee a kill, but last season we were 12 for 12 on bear with quite a few clients taking their bear on the first day of the hunt. In the last 3 years we have a 90% success rate on bear hunts. Lion hunts are much more difficult, our lion hunts take place primarily on dry ground, this is one of the toughest hunts out there. The only guarantee we can make is that we will hunt our tails off for each and every hunter. We take pride in the fact that we harvest mostly mature males. Last year we were able to harvest 5 boars over 20”. This is not typical, it was a fantastic year. We sorted through lots of animals and were very picky about what bears we wanted. We did harvest 20” bears in 2010 and 2009 as well. We strive to take large mature males. As you know our bear hunts are ran on quotas and it does not benefit us as outfitters to take sows. We would rather pass on a sow and go try to find a boar for this reason. In my experience Arizona is not the land of the 200lb mountain lion. If you are looking for a 200lb snow cat, you should not book with us. You should contact an outfitter further North. Mature toms here average 100-140lbs. Females are usually 60-80lbs, occasionally bigger. We do get some good skull growth in Arizona and occasionally a 15” tom will be taken but they are few and far between." On average, HD Trophy Hunts has between 12-20 clients each year. Last year they had 18. Right now they only guide in Arizona, but are looking to expand into New Mexico.
