    Coues 6A. First Scouting

You were in a good area, maybe just bad luck. I was up there this morning on the north side of stoneman lake road at the head of rattlesnake. Didn't glass up any coupes but had 4 of them inside of 100 yards run by me, including a nice buck. Until you sit the same spot multiple times you can't know what is around.

First Time Hunting have a Tag for 6A

I have the same tag and spend a lot of time in 6a. You are in good country around stoneman lake. There are white tails all over, so glassing from a good vantage point is key. Many guys will get up high and just stay behind the glass all day as WT are active a lot of the day. They like to go to water in the middle of the day, so watch the weather and find where they're drinking. I will be doing some scouting this fall so let me know when you are coming up and maybe we can team up.

    Adoption

So many great posts, and great info. It is so worth doing, either fostering or adopting. Life changing in so many good ways. But $1200 in trigger locks...at $12.99 each... I need to buy more guns! Holy crap you must have an armory! The homestudy is a pain, especially since it takes so long. And we had a great experience with catholic social services in our area as well.

    Adoption

Good for you guys thinking about adoption. I hope you can go through with it. I would encourage you to go the foster/adopt route as there are about 18,000 foster kids in AZ right now. There is a huge need for adoptive families. My wife and I have 2 biological children, and 4 adopted children, with one more in the works. Our first three we adopted through foster care, which we did for 7 years. There might not be anything more challenging and rewarding at the same time. If you adopt through fostering, costs are covered by the state. Also, the kids get a monthly adoption subsidy until they turn 18, and free health care. They also get help paying for college. If you go straight adoption, the costs are on you to cover. Here is a link to my wife's blog if you want to see what she has written about. A lot of it has to do with our international adoption. http://www.ransomforisrael.com Here is a link to a segment Fox10 News did on our family. http://www.fox10phoenix.com/news/arizona-news/215456447-story We are very active in helping other families adopt, so if you would like to hear our experiences, or get help navigating the system, let me know.

    Dog fence alternatives

The dog fence with the wire works great. You could always Bury some wire around a smaller part of your yard. That might be easier than trying to run wire around 6 acres.

    2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser 4x4

We are selling our Toyota FJ Cruiser. It is an awesome truck and I hate to see it go, but family reasons dictate it must. Nothing wrong with it at all, is super fun to drive. It is 4x4, 6 speed manual with cruise control. Has tilt wheel, roof rack, GOBI ladder system, CD player, and black cloth seats. Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac tires are in good shape at about 50% tread. 108, 600 miles on odometer. I also have a roof storage system for the top rack. Asking $15,600 obo. 928-3zero1-3250 call or text

    How early is to early

Scout the land, the water, the old elk sign... all are more important than where the elk are right now. Scouting usually gives a false sense of preparedness. In my experience, once the rut is about to get going, everything changes. they will move miles overnight. And be prepared to hunt closer to the road. Again, in my experience, you have to hunt the elk where they are. If you catch any videos on youtube of elk walking through a town or down a highway during the rut, its because they dont care. I would not plan on getting to the back country unless there is some grand reason. Not to say it would not be an awesome adventure, but the elk might be closer to the roads than you think. Just saying, be prepared to adjust and throw everything out the window once the rut starts.

    Colorado archery deer

A friend and I drew archery deer tags for Colorado 77/771/78 this fall. I have not hunted Colorado before, and am hoping for a great new tradition to start this year. I have looked through all of the posts referencing Colorado, and am totally stoked to get to join in the fun chasing mule deer with my bow. Our unit is around Pagosa Springs, and I have been pouring over maps and google earth and am excited at what I see. We are not looking for a wilderness backpack trip as much as just places to find deer. I have bad knees from years of playing hoops, so somewhat limited by that. I am willing to trade any information about hunting in Arizona to any Colorado guys. I think trading information is one of the benefits of a forum like this. Anyway, let me know if you can help. Darren
