    Full moon myth?

    Always seems to me that on a full moon cycle they rut all through the night and are very active in dark hours, but bed soon after the sun rises, and begin activity again early to mid afternoon and on through the night. I feel their activity levels remain the same, just at different hours. I've always glassed deer early morning hours as they bed down for the day. Whether that's backed by science or whatever I'm not sure. Just what I've seemed to experience. I've also heard that a full moon can effect when the does come into estrus, thusly attracting more bucks around a full moon cycle.

    I agree, and if there's a hot doe in there, if that buck leaves, I would think another buck would show up eventually.

    Hunting Arrow Weights

    All of my bows have shot heavier arrows 430-460grains, travelling anywhere from 295fps to 312fps, and shooting 100gr grim reaper 3 blade expandable broadheads. Over the course of 4 mule deer 1 bull elk and 5 javelina, every arrow was a pass through. Even on a mature mule deer at 80 yards, didn't matter if it was in a shoulder blade or not. Just crushed everything. And I agree, foam isn't too accurate to judge in my opinion.

    Burpees are terrible, hate em. But having the ability for your heart rate to recover quickly,especially in the woods, is valuable. I like mixing crossfit type workouts in, but I'd never go full crossfit haha

    I'm with you. For competition purposes I suppose not using a rangefinder is another challenge, but it didn't sound like many shots at TTH were much passed 40 yards. On the second day for the challenge course the range is given to you. Hope to see you there!

    Hunting the burns

    I know this thread is old... but I feel it's fitting for me to comment here. As a wildland firefighter in cave creek on 5he tonto, I've seen first hand, both mules and whites roll around in cool/warm ashes, I assume to choke out tics and such. I've also seen within 2/3 weeks, some very nice mature bucks frequent those burns If there was a bit of rain since it burned, they'll be in there eating anything they can that's fresh. As for burns up north in Pondo/PJ forests, the following year after the burn will usually hold/attract mature bucks. I was on a 40 acre fire off the young rd and 260 this august, and you wouldn't believe the caliber of animals that were within 10 feet of the fires edge feeding like normal, with active fire.     Monday Check in

    3 miles yesterday, slow grind. Too much coffee in the morning hours and was a bit dehydrated.
  17. Coming out of 2016 wildland fire season, I was in the best shape of my life. The next 2 months life got busy and I almost went 2 months without lifting/hiking/running. The last 2 weeks I've been back on the run, jump starting my motivation to get it goin more regularly for improvement through 2017.eventually my goal is to establish a routine that includes endurance runs, along with interval training and weights. Get myself back into elk shape and feelin like a stud in the mountains. P.S. My fitness Pal is very helpful with diet. A few guys at work saw huge improvements when used with exercise.     Family Strengths

    Fairly new to the site, my name is Justin Buffington, currently a seasonal wildland firefighter on the Cave Creek Ranger District. (Type 3 engine crew) Tryin to get that city fire job in the off season to better support the family. If anyone has questions about unit 21, I've got to know some areas pretty well through work. I also do alot of manual labor side work in the winters.

    Harquahala unit 41 archery

    I grew up in Tonopah, always hunting the Harquahala valley ag fields in december for archery deer. Hunting used to be fantastic out there, always yielding sightings and opportunities at great bucks, however, Last time I made a trip out there was about 4 years ago, and only to find out that a specific group of people had been doin some serious damage to the deer populations around the ag fields at night. On that 4 day trip, not a single buck had been glassed up or seen in the ag fields at low light. I'm trying to decide if it's worth a trip out there to my old stomping grounds for a day this month, and was curious if anyone knows the condition of the deer herd out there in the Harquahala area. just not wanting to waste a day in the desert rather than heading north to cold country.     Interval training

    Typically we would alternate HITT with more endurance trail running. Usually switching between the 2 week to week. A week to work hard cardio, and a week to let it recover with longer slower runs. But your right, HIIT sucks

    G&F knows about it, I've witnessed it with my own eyes, as I was sittin atop a big hill behind binos at 530am and state rigs were out in force. Simply just a bigger problem than I think they know. Spotlights and .22 mags are mighty popular out there.

    Yeah I hear ya, I've always tried to get up high where I can glass and watch the deer leave the fields and try to keep eyes on them til they either bed down or go out of sight, then relocate. More hunting takes place in washes/foothills/flats than the actual fields. I remember the days huntin with dad out there we would never see another hunter. Now days it's rare to see less than 5 trucks with lawn chairs in the bed in a day
