I know a lot of guys, myself included, like the Garmin Rino series GPS units because of their two-way radio feature and the capability to transmit your location to a hunting partner with a similar device (obviously you can receive their location as well). This feature combo is borderline essential to me when hunting with a friend or a small group. I've got outdated gear and still use the Rino 130 which lacks decent memory (I think it has 16mb or something), I can only load one or two topo maps on that one, but the backup Rino 120 only has 8mb so sometimes it can't even handle one topo. Neither the 130 or 120 have a color display and battery life is mediocre. When I'm not hunting with a friend I use a Garmin etrex20 which can store the topos for a few states and has only one joystick-style button to navigate most menus. Battery life is awesome with that unit because it doesn't power the radio and all that. It's also very small and has a color screen. It's a pretty bare bones GPS unit with excellent reception that gets the job done for me. To get to your question, my decision for a GPS would focus a lot on whether I want the two-way radio and send/receive location feature. Next would be storage, but just about all of the new units should be fine with memory. Battery life and durability. Price will obviously play a huge role. I don't need touchscreens, satellite images, or map packages (you can find a lot of the maps for free at gpsfiledepot.com). I rambled a bit but I hope this helps!

Have you tinkered with advanced map settings in the Setup - Map section? I have an older Rino and I remember having to select how close I have to zoom to see certain details. How do you like it so far?

I've been using the viair 88p for a while and it works well. Half the price of the 300p but not as powerful. I just top off the tires, don't air down and up all the time. Works for me and is built pretty solid. I just went through a similar situation with the $500 budget for binos and ended up with a set of Zen-Ray ED3 in 8x43. I'm pretty impressed so far. Excellent clarity and field of view, and it was field of view I was really after. The Monarch 7 8x42 were on my short list but little things like the crappy ocular lens caps (the same ones on my 10x42 Monarchs from about 10 years ago) and mediocre feel in my hands drove me to the to the zen-rays. Sample list at cameraland for $330 made them an easy choice. Made in China though. The Viper HD in 8x42 have under 350' fov, which made them a no go for me. From the reviews I read on bird forums and hunting forums, in this price range and 42mm objective the only competition for the Monarch 7 is the Zen-Ray ED3 if you want over 400' in fov. That said, the Viper HD in 8x32 has 400' and was pretty impressive. It seemed like the objective lens was very close to the edge of the binos, though, and there was a little bit of glare from the sun while I was messing with them. Another option that kept popping up in my research was the Swaro 8x30 SLC (not the CL) or even the 7x30 SLC. If you start looking into those SLCs (which seem to go on ebay for around $500 sometimes) you'll see almost nothing but positive reviews and they (the 8x30 WB, not the 7x30 have approximately 400' fov. They have a different placement for the focus knob (toward the front and you use your ring finger; not in the way of a hat brim). I don't believe they have a tripod adapter. I couldn't get my hands on them though. Good luck in your search!

What are you using now? I would really make sure you want (need) a dSLR before you spend your money. Unless you do a lot of action photography (sports or your kids or something) a dSLR is just big and, like others have mentioned, the lenses are extremely expensive. Have you thought about buying used? My dSLR stays home a lot because it's big, and the point and shoot comes with me unless I'm with the kids. I would suggest doing a lot of reading at ken rockwell's site. He has a lot to say about cameras and photography in general and he has a very practical approach to the gear he recommends and his articles on composition are awesome. Check it out, http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/recommended-cameras.htm If I were in the market for a camera to photograph/video game I'd be getting the ultra zoom (24x) Lumix DMC FZ200, which is not a DSLR (http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-cameras/panasonic-lumix-dmc-fz200/4505-6501_7-35374662.html). I don't have this camera and don't work for Panasonic, but from what I've been hearing, the video is awesome, and the zoom and pic quality are quite good. Youtube has reviews of every camera you could imagine buying... if video is important to you, check out the video from the cameras you're interested in and make sure it works for you.
