  5. Never an issue with bugs just dont forget your head net (surplus store) or insect repellent the nats and or mosquito's are fierce. We did use sleeping pads forgot to mention it.
  6. I have hunted bear in the Mazatzals several times in August we were hiking in about 8 to 11 miles depending on our destination, so we pack light due to the heat. We only take food you can eat without cooking, and no sleeping bag we just lay on a tarp (the ones with a reflective side) and fold the other half over you while wearing a mosquito head net. We have never had any issues with insects.

    165 gr. VLD .277 CAL.

That is correct. I have 200 170 gr. Bergers but Im so busy I dont have time to work with them. I have a 1/9 twist, the box for the Bergers says 1/8.3 I think they will do ok in my rifle. I would like to try those Matrix 165 gr. though which do ok in a 1/10 twist.
  8. I ask the new owner of Matrix Bullets about the availability of 165 gr. VLD Caliber .277 for my 270 Win. at the time he didnt have the dies, the previous owner took them with him when he sold the company. Below is a response to my previous inquiry. If anyone would like to spit 500 bullets with me let me know, I dont want to buy that many until I find a load for the rifle. As orders start coming in he will keep up the production for future orders. Steve Baardsen 11:13 AM (6 hours ago) to me Hi Guys I have good news on the 270 bullets. The previous owner and I have an agreement to pick up the dies in about 2 weeks because I am leaving for a big match early next week for a week. In the communication between us I got confused in the jackets I needed to make the 165’s. It turns out I have access to the same jackets the previous owner used without much delay from another vendor. The Bergers that I was requested to get make 147 match bullets and these are the bullets that he uses. These are a 5 – 6 month delivery at this time. When I get the dies I will be able to make the following bullets and I will take orders for all of them. 147 VLD match bullets – Delivery would be about December / January 2018 due to jacket deliveries. 165 VLD hunting bullets – Delivery would be August – using original hunting jackets. 175 VLD – match bullets – Delivery would be July - using match jackets Once I get the website modified so you can place the orders (which should be early next week) then after I get back I will place the orders for the jackets. Deliveries for the jackets should be mid to 3rd week July. I will run the bullets immediately upon arrival of the jackets and deliveries will start about mid-August. After that first fulfillment of orders then I will try to keep the 165’s instock. I still am asking for a minimum order of 500 bullets. I will hold the cost at $52 USD per box which is the last cost that the previous owner was selling them at. I will need in increase the cost of the shipping but that will be a flat fee for 500 bullets and quote from the PO after that for larger quantities. Thanks for the interest and look forward to hearing from you more when I get the website up and running with the modifications. Steve
  9. Those heavy bullets and the lower muzzle velocity = longer barrel life. I like heavy for caliber bullets , they hold together better and penetrate deeper in large game.

SPF, Thanks to everyone who showed intrest.

Bump for a very nice rifle.
  11. A good friend and I hiked deep into an area we know holds a decent population of bears, with a late start we dodged several rattle snakes in the 100 degree heat, and spotted a few coues deer on the way in. At about the 11 mile mark our water supply had depleted to very low levels, and with at least another 4.5 miles to go, and sundown approaching fast we camped in a saddle with plans to hunt back to the truck and water at first light. On the way out I spotted a decent set of lion tracks in the soft wet soil where we stopped for water, I made a mental note and planned to come back to the area at a later time. A couple months past and there was a good storm that lasted about four days so I decided to hunt the area at first break in the storm. When I returned to the remote water source there were again fresh tracks about 200 feet lower then the first set, I climbed up to a saddle with three fingers leading to a flat about 45 feet wide by 70 yards long, behind me was a shear drop to the bottom of a ravine that led up and to the south. I set up my stand here calling with my favorite open reed call, using a fawn in distress for short periods with a full minute pause. After about fifteen minutes I had paused to look and listen when I heard a thump to my far left, which I didn't anticipate any predators using since it was so steep, what I didn't do was walk far enough to see large steps going from one boulder to another leading to the far ridge and the head of the dry creek bottom. At first the sound was so light I thought it was a coyote approaching, just as that thought entered my mind a heavy thump landed above, and to my hard left. I was sitting in a chair shaped boulder with my rifle butt in my shoulder, and the barrel resting on shooting sticks, I turned with my rifle ready to be greeted by a mountain lion looking at me with its head sticking out from the vegetation maybe three feet from the end of my rifle, there was brush blocking a clear shot and the lion started down the boulder to enter a clearing right in front of me, as its vitals cleared the bush I fired dropping the lion with one shot. One of the best hunts I have ever experienced.
  12. ^^^ The quality of the Seek Outside tipi is excellent, I like them better then Kifaru shelters because they add storm flaps on the zippers, I also like their stoves over Kifaru. The owner of seek outside used to work for Kifaru. The next time they send me a second sale ad I will forward the email to you catusjack.

  14. Backpack hunting in the SNOW/COLD you must have a way to dry your boots and clothing. You can do most of your cooking on the stove and warm up after being out all day long when the temperature is in the teens or much colder. A heated tipi is light, and gives plenty of space for its size. I have Seek Outside four man and large stove, its a little big when your by yourself but I can stand up to stretch when waiting out a storm. Lots of room for fire wood, and I stand up to get dressed. It can with stand a blizzard and weights only 7. 3 pounds with stove. They make smaller tipis and up to a 24 man tipi. If get on their mailing list they have second sales, I only paid $530 for my 4 man. https://seekoutside.com/

    6.5 Creedmoor for elk?

Something I would look at is the distance a bullet stops giving reliable expansion for a given velocity. Shot placement is key, below is an excellent example.

I shot a mule deer buck in Colorado that tested positive, the facility called to inform me it tested positive, and if I used a butcher they would refund the fee. If you cut it up yourself the refund is fifty dollars. He also asked if I ate any of the meat, (NO) which they advise you not to consume any meat that test positive. Game and Fish had an ongoing study feeding a captive mountain lion nothing but meat that tested positive to see the effects it may have, and asked if I would donate the meat for this purpose. It sucks harvesting a deer, packing it off a 900 foot near vertical cliff and three miles back to the truck just to feed it to a mountain lion.
