Bucks are always hiding, does are not, because does only get shot by a camera. By now, these deer have been through many months of hunting pressure (whether deer hunting or not). You have a much better chance of finding a buck with his guard down during the August OTC hunt. Lance is right that the rut should be kicking in soon, and they'll be chasing the does soon and having their mind focused on one thing only...

Nice buck/story. If you don't mind, what unit?

Nice looking buck!

I have a hawk helium xl along with their sticks. The noisiest i find with it isnt the stand itself, but rather the buckles on the straps. I've killed 2 coues within 15 yards in it and both times they heard me draw back my bow due to my dropdown rest. Total weight is about 25lbs.

I see that some were reporting rut was on in 33 around Christmas. Would it likely still be on? I am split between 24A and 33, but if one is rutting and one not, It makes the decision easier! Thanks again.

Woo hoo! Thanks for the reports

Anyone seeing rutting up in 24A? Was there end of December and it wasn't on yet. Thanks.

4 more on Sunday. A late one came in after these 3 with nose down low, but it was a little doe too. Maybe next weekend. Tag soup for me. From tree stand, 10 yards downwind. Didn't see me until I almost dropped my camera and made a sudden move. No scent blocker. No avionics. Happy new year!

Just saw a doe within 15 yards. No buck in tow....

My cameras confirm bucks are still in Bachelors groups.

Thanks.

Bummer. Is he up high chasing WT or low with mullies?
-
What unit were you in?

Heading to 24A this weekend, chasing after WT in the Pinals (again). I hope the rut turns up a bit with this cold weather coming through. Nights are not getting any longer, so they should start? 3rd Quarter moon too, may help keep them moving during shooting hours. I wish they'd fix that dang webcam at the top on the antennas. GL everyone.

FYI, when viewing the mobile version of the forum, the forum itself works fine, but if you click on the hamburger menu in the top right to view messages, it doesn't remain responsive.... the elements to view the menu options(account, browse, activity, etc.) are shown off screen to the right, and you have to scroll to the right to see those menu options (and they don't shrink to fit your screen size).

Cow hunt, been at it since opening, but haven't seen any elk except on the Indian reservation,of course. Started on Bo, up north off hwy 18, (2 flat tires on one side of truck) then ended up north of pica camp, left after 3days and tried near segilman... Ditto. Glassing is hard in these areas due to just junipers and rolling hills. Glassing to 1.5 miles out hiking 6+ miles daily. Now, with 2 days left, I have moved to the kaibab near Williams (aka the zoo). Didn't scout here, as I thought I would get it done on the Big Bo, so maybe just luck will get it done. I can't believe I can't find any cow elk. Beats any day at work!

Thanks... will try it next time. Did some cow calling, but got nothing, but didn't try bugle, since the rut is relatively over... next time.

I have a question to the reservation, but haven't heard back, so thought I'd post here to see if anyone else has some insight. I will be hunting unit 10 for elk next week, and may need to travel through the reservation to get to a few spots in unit 10. Should I be concerned, so long as I'm not stepping out of the vehicle while I am on the reservation? Hualapai Indian Reservation is where I'll be passing through (hopefully). Thank you.

Thanks everyone. I will just stay on the main road.

My buddy and I went up scouting Unit 10 (Bo Ranch) this past weekend, as we have the first Cow Elk Rifle in Mid October. The Bo side of the unit wasn't what I was expecting... mainly rolling hills, a lot of juniper and SOME juniper/pinon mix. I was expecting more pinion and a bit more elevation/canyons. But we're focusing on that side, as we understand there are elk there and likely less hunters (I've been told the further west and north you go, the less hunters [williams area will be slammed]) Previous advice I've been given is that by October they'll not be bugling, will be spooked and looking for sanctuary areas to hide. When there are no deep canyons, do they just tend to go to remote areas and hunker down during the day? What is a "sanctuary" area when there are no deep canyons? Can't sit water, use cameras, tree stand/blinds, ATV/UTV. Spotted only 3 cow elk - all loners, but the temperature was at about 89 - 90 degrees still, and felt hot in the sun. I thought we might start hearing some bugling, but didn't hear a peep at all. Not feeling too excited at this point. Unit 10 is HUUUUUGE! Is it possible that bugling is running late due to the hit, so it may run longer into October, or is that just wishful thinking?

Curious, when glassing, not in early a.m., where are you looking? Shadows under pinion and junipers? No trees in the Bo.
-
Care to join me for an hour and call one in for me on day 1? 🙂

Thanks. What are their preferred food? Just grasses? I know coes for example, are find of the flower on barrel cactus. You really think they will be in the open in October?
