    Considering OTC Deer in Dec

I like 33 and will probably spend some time down there this winter, but I'd point out that those deer get pushed around... A LOT! I don't like smart/experienced deer, I prefer them to be dumb and gullible, just like college girlfriends. It's a good thing to see a lot of deer, but given the choice I'll take a handful of up close encounters over a 100 sightings through binoculars that never amount to squat. Stick with steep nasty stuff and you'll find yourself lonely, which is a good thing if you want to put an arrow in something. If your game is to just shoot something legal, it's very easy to do. Find a nice flat saddle with some decent trails in it on top of a steep ridge with nasty thick cover on the north hill side. Dig yourself a hole in a juniper or some other brush that allows a few good shooting lanes. Settle in and get comfy with a good book. It might take a few days of sitting, but something with antlers will come by. If you want a big ole nasty boy for the wall, buy high powered binoculars and start practicing being very, very sneaky. Coues deer are pretty easy to ambush, but extremely difficult to stalk within 40 yards of. Thank you!

    Lost tripod in 33

If it's a honey hole spot for glassing, PM me the coordinates of the glassing spot, and I'll go look for it. :-)

    Considering OTC Deer in Dec

Ya, considering it. I just miss trees (I'm from back east), and the part I've scouted on 33, (Charleau Gap/Peppersauce and that side of 33) is scant of trees. I understand I'm not hunting trees but deer, but thought this may be an opportunity to experience a different unit and maybe a few trees.

AZ Sawbuck, In your opinion, what defines a "bow friendly area" for a beginner in Arizona? What should one look for besides deer? :-) 36B? I should bring my AK47 with me.... Thanks.

    Good sized bucks?

Well, my buddy was able to tag one of these we caught on camera on day 1 by 10:00 a.m in unit 33. I didn't get in until Sunday, and only saw does for the next 4 days. To add insult, when returning at the end of day 3, I came across a 3 muley buckeys driving back to the B&B. Tag soup for me again... Next year....
  8. From back east, so wondering what you think of these guys that I got on my trail camera. I think they're pretty decent for coues?

Digging the new '16 lineups so far!

Just need to change how they name these and everyone will be standing in line to get one. Hoyt 6, Hoyt 6s, etc.

    Good sized bucks?

Oh ya..thanks. I appreciate the help. Building on what I learned last year... I like trail cameras terrain and slope which does not appear to be so bad online is awful in the real world. Don't forget to pack bug spray and suntan lotion (ouch, ouch) Grassy covered hillsides from afar are deceiving, as they are always steeper and full of crap that will try and break your ankles. Tie everything down good on your ATV, or its gone (radio, seat cushion). Lost my seat cushion twice, actually. Being old and driving an ATV all day long makes your muscles ache for 3+ days Spotting where to put your ATV tires is very important. Work will allow me to spend more days in the field actually hunting than last year. We have a few decent spots picked out. One is remote, and should be good to go, another is near a trail, so may have friends come October sitting next to us, or across the creek.

So, a bit on the small size, apparently. They "looked" a bit young to me Thanks for the feedback..I've heard that coues are small, but wasn't sure what "small" was. Thanks PS - dang Coues Pursuit... you a stalker? :-) unit 33 it is....

Surrender your tag. Here's your chance

It's your imagination... the link in the article provided is for something else. Here's a link to the rulemaking: http://www.azgfd.gov/pdfs/fishing/article1NPRM.pdf
  17. Having a difficult time finding an answer on the interweb, so thought I'd ask here. Is it legal to shoot you bow in your backyard in the City of Phoenix/Maricopa County? I see last year it was made okay to "legally shoot archery on private property in Maricopa"... not sure what "legally shoot" means. I'm still searching, but just in case someone here has a definitive answer, it's much appreciated.

    Archery in your backyard?

Thanks for the replies. I can legally conceal carry my pistol until I get to a federal building, then its no longer legal. I was wondering that perhaps there was an odd rule in dense hh areas or near schools, etc. Where it would no linger be . Legal for archery. Shoot, airsoft guns are or were illegal to use in Scottsdale. .crazy. I have been shooting, just want to make sure in case one of my neighbors freak out.

    Trail Cameras in AZ?

I got a tag, not sure if its 33 rifle or bow 12ab, but will be making some scouting trips and setting up cams. thanks
  20. Beyond the areas where there are tons of trees, a lot of hunting happens where your Mesquite is your rare tree, are trail cameras any use in these environments? I've put in for a draw in unit 33, and hunted for Coues last year in the unit in the fingerlings area near PepperSauce (N.E. Side of mountains) and would like to incorporate trail cameras as part of my scouting this year (assuming I get a tag). So, anyone use trail cameras out in the desert to monitor trails, springs, etc. Thanks.

    Trail Cameras in AZ?

Thanks everyone! I didn't think Locks really mattered in today's world. If someone wants it, a cheap bolt cutter can handle it. Hiding is key, I would presume.
  22. So, for an OTC "non permit, permit", is it good for any season for the year, or just for the one season? So, if I get an OTC this summer, can I use it in Aug/Sept and/or Dec, understanding the limit of 1 deer. I ask because in the regs, it shows some units up to 3 different "hunting seasons" while other areas are 2, and of course, a few areas are draw only. Thanks.
