  1. I'd just stick with 33. You'll see way more deer than in any of the more northern units, and that means more opportunity.

    Good luck.

Ya, considering it. I just miss trees (I'm from back east), and the part I've scouted on 33, (Charleau Gap/Peppersauce and that side of 33) is scant of trees. I understand I'm not hunting trees but deer, but thought this may be an opportunity to experience a different unit and maybe a few trees.

  2. So, I have never bow hunted before, and I am considering buying an OTC for a December hunt, since I'm going to be off work during the holidays.

Any advice on a decent unit for a first-timer bow hunter?

The only one I've scouted so far, has been 33, for rifle, but was hoping for something a bit further north, but I am unfamiliar with the units up North.

Any thoughts on Unit 22, 23, 24 (assuming they have a Dec OTC hunt).

    Thanks for any thoughts.

  3. Well, my buddy was able to tag one of these we caught on camera on day 1 by 10:00 a.m in unit 33. I didn't get in until Sunday, and only saw does for the next 4 days. To add insult, when returning at the end of day 3, I came across a 3 muley buckeys driving back to the B&B.

    Tag soup for me again...

    Next year....

  4. Oh ya..thanks. I appreciate the help.

Building on what I learned last year...

    I like trail cameras

terrain and slope which does not appear to be so bad online is awful in the real world.

Don't forget to pack bug spray and suntan lotion (ouch, ouch)

Grassy covered hillsides from afar are deceiving, as they are always steeper and full of crap that will try and break your ankles.

Tie everything down good on your ATV, or its gone (radio, seat cushion). Lost my seat cushion twice, actually.

Being old and driving an ATV all day long makes your muscles ache for 3+ days

Spotting where to put your ATV tires is very important.

Work will allow me to spend more days in the field actually hunting than last year.

We have a few decent spots picked out. One is remote, and should be good to go, another is near a trail, so may have friends come October sitting next to us, or across the creek.

  5. Thanks for the replies.

I can legally conceal carry my pistol until I get to a federal building, then its no longer legal. I was wondering that perhaps there was an odd rule in dense hh areas or near schools, etc. Where it would no linger be . Legal for archery. Shoot, airsoft guns are or were illegal to use in Scottsdale. .crazy.

I have been shooting, just want to make sure in case one of my neighbors freak out.

  6. Having a difficult time finding an answer on the interweb, so thought I'd ask here.

Is it legal to shoot you bow in your backyard in the City of Phoenix/Maricopa County? I see last year it was made okay to "legally shoot archery on private property in Maricopa"... not sure what "legally shoot" means.

I'm still searching, but just in case someone here has a definitive answer, it's much appreciated.

  7. Beyond the areas where there are tons of trees, a lot of hunting happens where your Mesquite is your rare tree, are trail cameras any use in these environments?

I've put in for a draw in unit 33, and hunted for Coues last year in the unit in the fingerlings area near PepperSauce (N.E. Side of mountains) and would like to incorporate trail cameras as part of my scouting this year (assuming I get a tag).

So, anyone use trail cameras out in the desert to monitor trails, springs, etc.

    Thanks.

  8. So, for an OTC "non permit, permit", is it good for any season for the year, or just for the one season? So, if I get an OTC this summer, can I use it in Aug/Sept and/or Dec, understanding the limit of 1 deer.

I ask because in the regs, it shows some units up to 3 different "hunting seasons" while other areas are 2, and of course, a few areas are draw only.

    Thanks.
