From what I've seen, coues deer are absolutely thriving and spreading into even more mule deer country. Activity was low this summer and some into the fall as I think they were in conservation mode due to poor monsoons which I've seen before and greatly limiting activity.

I have not seen any buck or age class reductions from average.

Mexico was bad.   Evan the ranchers said they haven't had rain since July.  Until a couple weeks ago.  And the bucks we did see were in the low land (mule deer country) around the only water source.

I think government work would be worth him considering. I'm more familiar with municipalities but here are some considerations that might be applicable depending on organization:
    - Most large cities have public works departments and the need to maintain not just passenger vehicles but industrial vehicles too like solid waste (garbage) trucks, etc.
    - Steady work with a consistent schedule and holidays off or holiday pay.
    - Health insurance
    - Retirement plan (not as generous as it used to be but still better than nothing).
    - Ability to buy back military time as prior gov't service with pre-tax dollars, payroll deduction and once bought back this will give him 6 years of service in the municipal retirement plan (usually Arizona State Retirement System unless Phoenix or Tucson).
    -Room for advancement into supervision/mgmt
    -Training/Education benefits
-Tools?  I don't know if they supply tools or not.
-Hourly rate (usually less than pvt. sector but with the reduction in fringe benefits, it might be closer than they used to be).

Just some thoughts for your boy to consider.

  3. It was 1995 my first deer hunt and couse hunt.  My uncle who lived down south hunted couse his whole life.  He said just hike here and use your binos.  It was really boring as a teen.  Until we started finding deer 700 yards out and putting on a stalk.  I don't have found memories of my grandpa 12lb 30-06, 4x scope, LEATHER STRAPS, And old NECK SUPPORT for you binos digging into your neck.

I wish more people knew this. I had a friend that went to Mexico 4 times (I think he went with a very reputable outfitter also) before he killed his first buck over 100" .

A couple years ago the biggest of 4 bucks on a buddies ranch killed was 105". Last year I believe they killed 4 over 115" with 2 over the 125" mark.  Good management can help tremendously but it still doesn't guarantee a giant, unless you find a high fenced ranch that you want to hunt. I sure don't.

I would say most people shoot a 90-100 inch buck.  The ones that make it on here and youtube are the lucky 20%
