  1. Old farts - guess that's me. Bitter? No. Realistic? Yes. Again, if you can do it confidently and consistently, then by all means take the shot. I know my limits and stick to them. I've seen guys buy these long range guns and not shoot MOA at 100 yards, off a bench. And I know there are plenty of guys on this forum who can shoot better at 800 - 1000 than I can at 400 - 500. But not everyone who buys a 1000 yard gun for whatever price can shoot that gun to it's potential - especially in field conditions.

And to Matty's point - I've seen enough guys who can consistently shoot 8 inch groups at 80 yards with a bow in practice, either miss a bull entirely inside 50 yards or worse, a really bad hit, to discern between what we are capable of in practice vs. in the field.

One guy I know was prepping for an upcoming archery elk hunt. Once he got confident shooting at known ranges in his yard, he started running around his house several times, then doing a bunch of push-ups and picking up his bow to see what he could really do with his heart and lungs racing and adrenaline flowing. I think we could all benefit by practicing this way.

All good points. Old fart is a term of endearment for me so didn't mean to offend.

  2. Good topic. Most of you old farts are just bitter because let's face it with the internet and multitude of options from custom to upper shelf commercial offerings going 1k isn't that hard do. Personally I wouldn't take an animal from that range unless it was a world class trophy situation., no time, etc...otherwise I'll just get closer. But going 1k makes 600 a layup which is way in my wheelhouse.

  3. I have a used but in good shape trailer valet for sale. I bought it to move my bass boat around after i hurt my achilles tendon but now that i'm healed up i don't use much anymore.

The only issue with it is that the master link on the chain disengaged and i can't find the locking mechanism. You can see the chain hanging in the pic. It can be easily purchased at a cycle shop or can be ordered from the company direct for shipping cost only (I checked into that already).

The tires are good and hold air....makes moving those duel axle trailers around much much easier (way easier than go jacks in my opinion). It's rated to move 5000 lb trailers. You can see in the picture how it would mount to the trailer. The gray bracket has alot of adjustment to accomodate different size trailer frames. When you are not using it you can remove the locking pin and remove the entire system or you can simply tilt it 90º and lock it in that position (I never towed my trailer with it on...i only used it when i stowed it in my garage so once the boat was hooked to my truck i took it off).

I paid $400 + tax new....looks like they are on sale on their web site for $370 including tax.......priced to sell at $250.

For more information regarding how it works you can go to their website at : https://www.trailervalet.com/ . There are also some you tube videos.

    Thanks

  4. Got up there on Tuesday night which gave me two full days to scout (plus 2.5 days a couple weeks prior). I hunted this same unit with the muzzy tag last year so i felt pretty confident with respect to familiarity of the unit, etc.

Overall, it was kind of tough for me. I had no problem seeing deer (mostly early and late) but when they bedded it down seemed like they were really in the thick stuff. I wasn't able to glass up as many bedded deer as last year.

I had one honey hole picked out where i saw a total of 4 4x4s in back to back glassing sessions (not monsters, just decent bucks pushing 150-165 ish maybe)...figured i'd start there opening morning. The night before the hunt i decided i would not pass up a decent 4x4. I was humping on a dirt road glassing canyons and bedding slopes... with the naked eye at 250 yards i saw what looked like a deer staring at me....he saw me before i saw him and he was the only buck i'd seen on this session up to this point. He started moving up the hill to go over the ridge and as mentioned earlier i decided I would not pass up anything i'd be happy to shoot on the 4 or 5th day of the hunt. One shot one kill at 300 yards. Packed him out by myself which was kind of cool.

I roughed him out at 150" with a 22" spread. I figure the next time i hunt mulies i'm going to be going for "the one" or nothing at all....

My buddy arrived Friday night (after all the packing work was done of course lol)....we then hunted a few extra days for his tag but couldn't find anything big...so on his last night we road hunted and shot a dink right off the 225 like clockwork lol. I'm by no means a road hunter, but he just wanted meat in teh freezer so this method was a high confidence maneuver to get him something with a super easy packout.

In summary a good hunt and i'm happy to have meat in the freezer, happy we went 2 for 2, and i'm happy to have officially broken in my custom 7rem mag. I wish the temps were a little cooler and there was more moisture...it was hot and dry for the most part. I saw two bigger bucks taken by fellow hunters on the east side...maybe 185ish and 175ish...but no giants (>200"). I was surprised that in my ~5 days of scouting and 4 days of hunting i never set eyes on a 200" buck....I know they don't grow on trees but usually you spot a couple monsters (getting on them can be a different story as you all know). The game and fish had pics going at the check in station and there were definitely some bigguns taken. The G&F guy told me you had to be at 21" to crack the top 10 and 31" was top buck...not clear if that was the east side or total total for both sides.

Anyway, thanks to those who consulted me about this hunt (LK).

Oh, on a final note, i put a camera on a guzzler and let it sit for a couple weeks. i figured with the dry weather the bucks will be on water hard...but i only say the same handful of does and dink bucks. I did see one pretty good buck show up one night...but literally 15 seconds later a mountain lion was hot on his tracks...so either he got whacked or was smart enough never to come back to that watering hole. That cat was hitting the water regularly and patroling the tank waiting for prey to come in..it was pretty cool footage but sucked since that tank i had decent hopes for was pretty much f'd up. I'll post those videos in the tail came section when i get around to it.

    cheers

  5. I guess it is just a change in the mentality of the hunter and the atmosphere in which we hunt.

Nowadays I care more about being out in the woods than the kill. I want to see my children out in the woods and soon my grand kids.

And I like a good story.

lets flip this around. what difference does it make what unit it was killed in? why does not knowing the unit # impact your satisfaction of the story? the guys that draw regularly and have above average success are finding sleeper units/hunts and making a substantive improvement in their odds of hunting/drawing. lots of drama over nothing here folks...move on...nothing to see here

  6. Hi,

i need to dial in my new rig for my upcoming hunt. i'd like to get it setup out to 1000 yards and i heard cowtown range is pretty decent. any opinions on it? what are the costs? i tried calling several times but it keeps going to an answering machine (I sent an email too).

    thanks

  7. i shoot hornady sst 250 grain with blackhorn powder and magnum primers.

i used to shoot the pellets but the blackhorm is way better...easier loading and more accurate.

i've shot elk and mule deer very successfully..last muley at 276 yards and he dropped on the spot.

  8. That's Awesome!!!! How much would a typical Elk, Deer or Antelope hunt cost to have done?

Adam the guy who did the video is doing one right now in CA. He's going to setup an account here when he gets back so I'll ask him to follow up with you and you can decide if it makes sense or not.

    Thanks for the positive response.
