  1. Saturday was terribly windy in 5A. Couldn't hear anything, let alone a turkey responding to calls. Yesterday morning heard nothing. No gobbles at all. Got to hunting area at 5:20am and hunted until 10:30. Tried at least 5 different spots within about a 10 mile radius. Very dry. Where did the turkeys go? I had the same exact hunt last year and they were gobbling all morning.

Me as well. Was up in 5A and scouted several areas. Very, very windy. Couldn't hear any birds. Hoping this weekend will be different.

  2. If you don't want to go to jail and or complete animal cruelty classes and pay for vet bills. Get a haveaheart trap and canned Mackerel. Trap them and relocate them at least 10 miles. It can be kinda a slow process but it's legal and effective.

I have used this method very effectively. I don't have a problem knocking off a feral or stray cat that causes havoc in my yard, but I don't need Sheriff Joe knocking on my door. Cheap cans of wet cat food and traps worked like a charm for me. Every morning I put the traps in the back of my truck and drove the cats 19 miles to work, which was an industrial area in Tolleson. Let em go and never saw them again.

    This.

Harbor Freight medium trap. $20 and works great. We had the exact same issue with a next door neighbor. I keep my bass boat covered tight as a drum in a covered area on the other side of my house. Cats would still figure out how to get under the boat cover and cause major issues. Called the county, the city of Phoenix, then the humane society. They wanted $91 a cat if I dropped them off at their place. They then suggested that I bring them in so they can spay/neuter them, then place them back in the same neighborhood. HF trap with wet cat food. Trap still works as well as it did on day one.

  3. I'm pretty new to the forum and figured I'd share some success. I was up scouting for turkey today with a buddy of mine up in 5A and ran across these two sheds today. First ever elk sheds for me....and of course like a dumb arse, spaced on getting a pic of ATL. I quail hunt a ton and then only other sheds I've come across are chalked deer sheds. So, I was pretty happy with this find. Anyways...here they are. I'll be back up in 5A for the next couple weekends chasing birds. I can see how this is addicting. Found them early in the AM and was on the constant look for the rest of the scout.

  4. Any thoughts on upgrading your trolling motor batteries? We had similar situations when a group of us would do a cast and blast up near Long Lake years' back. We'd be there fishing and duck hunting for a few days and never had an issue. Didn't bring a generator, but did use a 15W solar charger at the end of the day to top off the trolling batteries. My setup for the trolling motor/batteries were two Deka Intimidator AGM group 37's run in parallel to power a 12V Minn Kota 55# trolling motor. Windy as heck up at Long in the fall, so I was on the trolling motor all day. Got done fishing in the afternoon and hooked up the solar charger. Worked great.

If you're fishing for longer periods of time, I would suggest keeping the solar charger on the troller batteries while fishing. But definitely think about upgrading to an AGM battery (or batteries in parallel) for the trolling motor. They last much longer than a standard wet-cell deep cycle. Granted some AGM's can work for a starter battery too, but you have to ensure the CCA's are large enough to turn over the outboard. Deka AGM's can also be used as a starting battery. I've used them for starting batteries as well as trolling motor batteries in my old tri-hull with a 50HP Johnson and also currently in my Champ 181 with a 150 Evinrude.

  5. I was up at Apache last Saturday. Towed my Champ 181 on a single axle trailer. Took the back way in from Roosevelt. The road was in decent shape. Didn't lose any taillights on my trailer this time around, so in my opinion it was a good day.

Smallies were crushing green Pointers and 110's. Picked up a few on dropshot and spider jigs. But seemed that craw cranks and jerkbaits were the ticket.
