  1. Went down to our friends Texas ranch to hunt hogs and predators for a long weekend. Being a Michigan boy I would do drives during the day pushing cattail marshes using my scent and some hollering to get pigs up and pushing them to my buddy. I carried shotgun with buckshot and killed 2 under 5 yards erupting almost under foot. Heck of an adrenaline rush.

At night we would use our thermals and knocked the wind out of them. We killed 34 in 4 days and my buddy took a nice bobcat. Midday we went shed hunting and did well. Texas is a place everyone needs to experience…just a different place.

Yeah I'll be over on that hunt. Gonna go learn the unit hopefully in the next few weeks with my buddy

Keep us posted on how your scouting is going. I appreciate how you are always positive and ready and willing to offer information and advice on here. I know that unit and that hunt very well. As it gets close we can compare notes and see if I can help you guys be successful.  Mark

Congrats that's a nice one. I hunted east of Tonto Basin until noon. Hiked in about 1/2 a mile off a two track and spent all morning glassing from one hill. Glassed up  three Ravens, a  Red-Shouldered Hawk and a Kestrel.

I heard some shots way off in the distance a few times but it was a slow, cool, cloudy morning.  I did see quite a few people in camo driving  endlessly around on the two tracks in SXS's and one guy in Blaze Orange driving what looked to be a smaller Red SUV, at least he was in style and comfort. It might have been an EV as it was very quiet.

I live off new river and saddle mountain rd so I decided to hunt 5 miles north in little drainage that usually hold 5-8 and they were right there. Sunrise was incredible this morning

  4. Had the opportunity to head up to my good buddy’s place in Colorado between Christmas and New Year’s to help him on a special deer tag in one of Colorado’s Open Space hunts.
We were able to find a great buck for him on the first day and he made a perfect shot. That freed up 3 extra days to head to his ranch to chase lions and I was able to harvest a beautiful cat on the first morning out. I’ll spare you all the read and you can watch both hunts!

    Sounds like a good time

It’s a riot but one thing I will advise for those applying is get in shape…..not this 5 day cardio nonsense but push heavy weight especially legs and back. I hauled 7 loads off that mountain between 9,600 ft and 11,100 last year.

As far as elk numbers it is very similar to hunting Colorado backcountry early season. All of it looks great but elk are concentrated in pockets. Locate those pockets and you are money.

Use downward thermals in AM and upward late morning-midday to your advantage….never compromise scent control/wind direction to chase a bugle. We hunt all day. When thermals switch we get to edges of dark timber where we know our scent is blowing into an area devoid of elk and wait for the right situation to go after a bull.

it is thick so when you hear a bull most the time you are close. They do not prefer to come down to a call so get on the same elevation line before you sweet talk him in.

I hope this information is helpful with the draw. I would offer to help this year but will be doing a DIY float moose hunting Alaska most of September. Good luck!

Didn’t that guys kid a nice one with a muzzy there or something last season

Love that hunt…killed 4 bulls in 5 days last year on early archery. I called in 9 different bulls in one day. And my boy killed 362” bull year prior. I love it primarily because most hunters are not willing to put the work in to be successful and we never hardly see a soul. That hunt definitely favors guys who put the work in at the gym ahead of season.

I’d like this but not for free, how about I see what I could do in trade for your little guy? If so could I pick it up monday?

I have one gentleman that inquired first and if he does not follow through it is yours. If you would like to do a modest trade for something my boy could benefit from I certainly would not decline. I will give the other gentleman a day to coordinate pickup and then we can chat if still available. Thx Mark

Great for beginners as it is low poundage and continuous draw cycle so no need for draw length adjustments. In my opinion great for a 5-10 year old. Just need to come pickup off Carefree Highway and 7th Steet.
