  1. I got my 2A/2B antlerless tag for Sep 13-22.  Actually perfect for me!  It's in my backyard, a time & place to be outdoors, and we're all into meat more than horns anyway.  Happy to get it, and our mission is bag a nice cow for all our families.

One day I'll hunt bulls.  Starting today, I'm prepping for a fall solstice hunt with my buddies.

Congratulations to all who drew tags!  Hope it's a productive and amazing elk season!

  2. So did your tags already come in, or did you only apply for just those hunts?  Either way, congratulations, that's awesome!

We're still waiting to hear what we got drawn for last Friday.  My payment posted just fine that night, why all the secrecy!?

WRONG!  Some of you have WAAAY too much confidence in AGFC’s system.  Year before last. I applied for archery elk and pronghorn point only.  My cc was hit for elk tag amount.  When the portal info was uploaded, it showed elk unsuccessful, and pronghorn was successful for a rifle hunt.  Again, I applied for elk archery, pronghorn point only, and cc was hit for elk tag amount.  Final ruling from AGFC  was no tag, a refund, and lame excuse that “computer had a glitch”

That's terrible!  Sorry to hear that happened to you.  I know this entire process is bumpy and full of twisty turns, so until I see that tag I won't count my chickens no matter how tempting!

I'm lucky enough to have 5 kids and right now 3 are of hunting age. All 3 have killed one elk the last years. We got drawn for 2 youth tags this year (a first). Cant wait, I love helping my kids hunt. In the meantime im banking points for a primo hunt for me and my wife each. In the meantime i get to hunt with the kiddos and keep the freezer full. Not a bad gig at all!  My advice to you is learn and understand the draw process, your good now because you had minimal points and have a tag. Go do the hunters ed course and watch the AZGF YouTube videos on the draw process. The last thing you want to do is build up points and burn them on the wrong hunt. Hopefully you got beginners luck and scored a bull tag!

That's so cool your kids have scored so consistently, the mark of excellent parenting and hunter education from you both, kudos to you!  They are very lucky to have parents who can teach them life skills at such a high level.  I'll definitely take your advice, you can never learn too much.  If I know anything, it's that I've got alot to learn about alot of stuff, not just elk hunting!

Well if your happy just to hunt a new species in a new state you won't be disappointed. After all you drew a tag. I don't know draw odds for your hunts but based on the 2a and 2b threads you bumped to the top they seem less desirable and therefore you could have drawn it.  If you did.. here's the good news, you have home field advantage! Get a pair of 15s and a tripod and glass glass glass. Learn every part of the unit, find the north facing slopes and shady areas to identify bedding areas. Look up lots of threads on glassing etc. Find feed and water sources and stack the odds in your favor. Find shelter areas or push zones and you will be golden! Good luck dude!

I'm happy no matter what man!  Thanks so much for the great tips and the good vibes.  It means so much to me.  And yes I agree, home field advantage counts and that's really why I put that on as 4th choice.  I've seen them intermittently but it's clear they are generally somewhere else, "out there, somewhere" lol.  Did you get drawn?

In order for you to have drawn your 4th choice, all those tags would have had to make it into the third pass of the draw. Highly unlikely. If I were you, I’d start gathering some cold weather gear. :)

Music to my ears man!  I haven't been able to sleep since Friday thinking about it.

Actually, I spoke to soon. I still think odds are on your second choice, but your 4th choice may be a possibility. I would have to look at numbers for past years and I don't have them in front of me.

Thanks, I agree it is possible the 4th was selected...I've been anxiously waiting to find out like all of us have I'm sure.  Did you get a hit on your card?

If 2 points threw him in the bonus pass for the cow hunt wouldn't he have no chance at the other hunts? I don't know the process completely but that is how I think I understand it.  For your sake I hope I don't know what I am talking about.  :)

I would hope that my highest-preference choices would come first in any round....but again, I'm still new at all this.  I'm realistic about the odds but a Unit 9 or 10 hunt is far and away the way I'm hoping this will go.  Fingers crossed!!  BTW did you get a hit on the draw?

If you kill one at the bottom of a large canyon,  just bring a knife and fork and enjoy. Your buddies, once they find out where you killed it,  will "suddenly" remember they have other "obligations"  to tend to.  😁

I've packed out more than I've killed.  Part of the fun!

Elk sushi!  Sounds like my kinda fun :)

Like AZ8 said, you definitely drew your first or second choice and had no chance at your 3rd or 4th. Odds suggest you drew your second choice.

I'll be looking for a guide if this works out that way. A really good one, like the kind you could get a trophy with in most cases, and more importantly, be friends with for life.

Will this be your first elk hunt? You seem unfamiliar with the whole process, and I don't mean that disrespectfully.  Friends on an elk hunt are lifesavers. Any idea which hunt you got?

Non taken, and thank you for asking.  Yessir, it is my first elk hunt.  I spent my first 19 years growing up the piney woods of TX, then I lived in southern TN for over 20 more years, and have been a resident of AZ for the past couple years.  I've taken some really nice whitetails in my life but have never had the opportunity to hunt elk.  It's been a lifelong dream and it's so close I can taste it...but still have no idea what I got.  It's one of these 4 possibilities, in order of preference as listed on my entry.  1. Bull Elk, 09/27 - 10/03, Unit 10.  2. Bull Elk, 11/29 - 12/05, Unit 10.   3. Bull Elk, 11/29 - 12/05, Unit 9.  4. Antlerless Elk, 09/13 - 09/22, Units 2A and 2B.  The reason for 2A/2B is because that's where my ranch is.  It's truly my last resort entry.  I figure I could probably get an OTC tag and save my 2 points if it came to that, but I put in on there anyway because I liked the dates for a permit hunt and its right out my back door.  But if I drew a tag from one of those trophy units, I would be overjoyed. Trip of a lifetime!

Is this your first draw? If they hit your card, you have a tag. Relax.

It's not my first draw, but it is the first time I've gotten a hit on the card.  The whole experience is unnecessarily nerve-wracking, that much seems to hold true whether you get drawn or not apparently lol.  Thanks for the reply!

  13. Have a question about hunt party rules.  I believe I was drawn for an elk hunt based on the fact that my card was charged $135 on Friday 01 Mar.  I listed only myself on the hunt party.  Obviously in the event I do kill one, I would have a terrible time trying to pack that out alone.  My plan is to bring a couple non-shooter buddies along to assist me in the field and share the experience.  Keep in mind they will be with me, but I will be the only one armed with a rifle and I will be the one pulling the trigger.  Is this legal?

Heard they are going to redo the draw.

I hope they're only re-doing the draw for people whose cards didn't go through! My card was hit for $135 on Friday, still no tag or info on the site.  If they refund my money I'm gonna be devastated.

  15. The only result I got was a charge on my card in the amount of $135 last Friday, 01 Mar.  I called and asked which permit I was drawn for, and they said I would know "within 2 weeks".  Excited to find out, but anxiously waiting 2 more weeks to get info they already seem to have is a bit much.  But good news is I'm so close to fulfilling a lifelong dream - going on my very first elk hunt - somewhere!
